Georgia O'Keeffe Museum Collections

Absolutely worth the price
This is a HUGE, beautiful book which features some of Georgie O'Keeffe's most stunning works. The book is 12"x 10" and as thick as a dictionary, if not thicker. I was surprised by the heft of it.The entire book (besides a few pages of introductory text) is comprised of large, full-color plates of O'Keeffe's most luminous works. There are over 300 plates in all. The pages are super-thick and glossy, and there are several "fold out" pages to provide an even closer look at some of the works of art. The color is bright and vibrant.Note: One reviewer commented that there was too much "white space" around the images- I completely disagree. The images are made as large as possible and often cover the entire page, save a small white border around the image. Some of O'Keeffe's images are either horizontal in orientation or very long and tall; therefore, the only way to get the entire image on a page without distorting it, cropping it, or turning it is to surround it with *some* kind of border. However, the images are as large as possible- there are no "postage stamp" size images. This is truly a generous offering of O'Keeffe's entire career. It's one of those art books that makes me feel lucky to own. It's really beautiful.

A beautiful book
A lovely set of O'Keefe's work. I hadn't seen any except one(A Street), and was interested in her work based on that one piece alone. The tidbits of info along with the paintings and other works are very nice.I will say what another poster mentioned; that some pieces of works are very small in comparison to the size of the book. I don't mind it that much, although some pages it's 70% white and 30% painting. I'm not sure if that's an editor choice or not. The book itself is rather big, so again, it doesn't bother me that much. But for reference, it's like a note card sitting on a piece of printer paper.Overall, I am in love with this book in her work, and am very happy with my purchase.

A Beautiful, Interesting & Enduring Legacy
Beautiful volume. She was as creative as the best and, it seems, her works have enduring value. As with the works of all great artists, they are as beautiful and interesting today as ever. Her private life, apparently, was also every bit as neurotic, painful and chaotic as was that of many other great painters.

Great Buy
I bought this book as a gift for a friend who loves Georgia O'Keeffe. This was a great buy. The quality of the images were really nice and the presentation was very well-done. Overall, I am satisfied that my friend enjoyed the book as a gift and I felt that it was well worth the money.

Title misleads a bit
What a beautiful big book this is published by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in New Mexico. The book title implies multiple museum collections of works by Georgia O'Keeffe will all be found here in this one volume. Well, no, the reason the word collections is plural is the inclusion of "collections" of all of these works by people other than O'Keeffe. If you are buying your first book containing O'Keeffe paintings try for the original book published by The Viking Press in 1976. It was printed in the USA as a Studio Book ( which means oversized) ISBN 0-670-33708-0. Much harder to find though might be ISBN 0-670-33709-9 lim. ed. Easiest to find would be the slightly smaller paperbound edition.

Very Nice Reproductions!
In contrast to a previous review which said the reproductions in this book are very small, I don't agree. It's a large book, and most of the reproductions are decent-sized and good quality.Along with the wonderful reproductions of Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings are some very nice photographs of her. This book isn't heavy on text, but what there is, I found valuable in interpreting the paintings.I'd recommend this book highly for any O'Keeffe fans.

A must for all lovers of O'Keeffe's work
Books and Exhibition Catalogues about Georgia O'Keeffe are not uncommon, not least because of her iconic status as a 20th century American female artist (female 20th century American artist?). The colours and images of her works, and their ready identification with the artist, are other factors in their ubiquity and acceptance by the general public. In 1997, the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum was opened in Santa Fe and this magnificent book was published to celebrate its tenth anniversary. The book contains 355 plates, mainly presented in chronological order and divided according to motif, reproduced in full colour that fully lives up to the artist's tremendously rich palette. The works include her paintings, drawings, sculpture and photographs (although few are included), as well as photographs of the artist by her husband, Alfred Stieglitz, Ansel Adams, Eliot Porter, Philippe Halsman, Yousuf Karsh and Todd Webb. A number of works by other American Modernist artists, including Bellows, Benton, Bluemner, Arthur Dove, Juan Hamilton, Hartley, Henri, Hopper, Marin and Sloane, are also included. Cady Wells' "Otowi Mountain", 1936, is the only work by a less familiar artist to be included. However, it stands comparison with the works of other artists that are included. The sections of this large book include an "Introduction" to both the Museum and the collection, following which the artist's works are divided into groups dealing with "Abstraction", "Sculpture", "Architecture", "Animal and Human Forms", "Natural and Still Life Forms", "Landscapes' and "Trees", and then "Other Works in the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum". There is also a Chronology, Selected Biography and a comprehensive Index. There is not a great deal of text in this book, with the works being illustrated as full/half page plates, with groups of plates being complemented by brief explanatory text. However, rather more than that of most artists, much of O'Keeffe's work presents itself. When the Museum opened, it contained 94 works by the artist, out of a total of 124. Even so, it represented the largest number of O'Keeffe's works in any museum. Over the subsequent decade it has grown very significantly, not least in 2006 when its remaining artworks were transferred by The Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation to the Museum. These included 163 completed paintings, drawings and sculptures, 669 sketches, 1770 photographs by professional photographers, 149 of O'Keeffe's own photographs. Over the decade a great number of letters from the artist and contributions to the debate on O'Keeffe's professional and personal lives have also been amassed. By 2007 the Museum's collection included 2989 works, including 1149 by the artist. The artist's sculptures, relatively unknown, are of interest for completeness. The artist only used this medium three times; firstly, in "Abstraction", 1917, to commemorate her mother's death. Strangely, the work is obviously phallic! Her second "Abstraction", from 1946, is spiral in form and is likely to relate to works on paper, such as "Goat's Horn with Blue", 1945. Her final sculpture is from very late in her career, when he declining sight made painting and drawing more difficult. "Abstraction", 1982, exists in 3 different cone-like forms. Two years later, the artist stopped working in any medium. This `coffee table' book is a `must' for all admirers of the artist and her work, and will be welcomed by those who see her work and are inspired. For those wanting an in-depth narrative of her life and artistic development should explore other recent titles, including books from this Museum.
