Current voice teachers owe a debt of gratitude to Joan Boytim. Not only was she a fine teacher and a champion for teachers working out of a private studio, she spent decades compiling literature for young voice students. Many of the selections in the "First Book" series are now a bit dated, and even politically incorrect given current matters of gender sensitivity. Still, the vast majority of repertoire in this series is terrific, and appropriate beginning students of singing. There are selections from Handel, Mozart, Purcell, Schubert, Schumann, Fauré, and many other standard classical composers along with a treasure trove of forgotten art songs from the vault of G. Schirmer. You will not be sorry to have these books in your collection. Until said time when an equally industrious teacher dedicates his or her life to compiling such generous collections (and having the connections to get them published), these books remain requisite.

Best baritone/bass book out there!!! It’s a must have!!!!

This book is spiral bound which I don't like, and the 3 individual book indexes are split up within this one--so the first index is at the beginning, but then the other two indexes are scattered throughout. Not that helpful in my opinion! I might as well have taken the three books myself, cut off the binding and spiral bound them together--that's how this book is made! Otherwise, I'm glad to have them all together.

I mean it came in great shape and has everything I needed and more, since I’m not going to learn the entire song list but I have choices now.

The book is a great collection. A must for all beginning male soloists. I wish the binding was a little heavier duty though.

The book itself is great but the binding is terrible! Very hard to turn pages. I felt that they would tear.

Great collection for young classical singing enthusiasts! Nice variety of challenges both in terms of poetry and vocal technique. A workhorse volume!
