Excellent Resource and Fun Read
Of the many books written about the Goth subculture, this one stands out. It is a visual exploration of the post-punk, new-romantic, gothic-rock scene of the 80's, unique in its choice of source material - an assortment of personal photos from club-goers, fans, artists (more and less known). Leafing through the book is a lot like leafing through a personal photo album - the images capture moments and offer a glimpse into the feelings and aspirations of the people who made up the "Goth" scene before it became overly defined and commercialized. This book is not about academic exploration and analysis, nor is it an historical document - it's a nostalgic trip that captures the essence of 80's post punk and goth by offering a glimpse of what it REALLY looked and felt like - not like how it was reinterpreted later, or how it was portrayed by the sensationalist media. There's no point going into an elaborate discussion of what is included and what is not (and why), as that would defeat the whole purpose - suffice is to say that any true fan of post-punk, new romantics and goth - whether someone who's lived through it a younger "baby bat" interested in the origins of Goth, will undoubtedly enjoy it.

A must-have international look at goth/post-punk culture, music & fashion
I supported this project on Kickstarter, and it was so exciting to finally receive the book itself! Wonderfully, thoughtfully put together - a must for anyone interested in goth/post-punk culture, music & fashion in the 1980s/1990s. While you'll see many familiar faces here like Patricia Morrison (The Bags, The Gun Club, The Sisters of Mercy, etc.), the authors also took great care to solicit photos & memories from all over the globe, making this an incredible survey of fashion, style, aesthetics, culture & music. Kudos to Harriman and Bontje for taking on this subject, but looking beyond the oft exclusively Eurocentric focus. It's fantastic to see a more global perspective, and you may even learn of a few bands & creatives you've never heard of! Absolutely a must-have volume.

Book arrived visibly dirty and rough
The book arrived with immediately obvious damage in the bottom corner and was visibly dirty to boot. I'd feel embarrassed to gift this to someone as I originally intended.

Beautiful gothic history
As a lover of subcultures. This book is rare and beautifully done. It celebrates the time and history of a time not forgotten by the ones that love it most. I read it cover to cover. Highly recommended!

A must-have for any Trad Goth enthuiast
I love this book so much that I am taking the time to write a review about it. This is a beautiful book with wonderful, evocative photographs. Extremely well-researched. You can tell that this was a labor of love for the authors and that they are enthusiastic about and excited by the subject matter. I am never taking this off my coffee table.

Amazon selling cheap quality, print on demand versions of this book. BEWARE
This book does look amazing, but the version I received from Amazon looked cheap and not like the version I had seen elsewhere. When I looked it up online I found that there are some cheap "print on demand" versions floating around, which is what i received from Amazon.FYI the proper version of this book is meant to be printed on high quality, thick paper with high quality photo printing. The version I received looked faded and printed on thin "newspaper" quality paper.I'm not going to leave a negative review because the book itself looked amazing. The issue was the quality of the print I received.

'Goths equivalent to porn'....
I bought this for my goth loving Robert Smith wannabe brother who was the ultimate 80's goth as a birthday gift....turns out he had saw the review for this book just the day before and was going to buy it for himself. When I asked if my gift choice was a success he replied 'God aye, it's the goths equivalent to porn'!!And he really did look like Robet Smith in 1983/1984!!
