Should it be plugged in all the time? Does this reduce battery life?

Worked as advertised the first time the power went out. did not work properly the second time. failed to automatically turn on. why? one year old.

Same here. Light doesn't come on at all when power goes out. Tested a million times. No there are not 2 positions on the switch, there never were, no having it turned on first when you plug it in doesn't matter, power going out does nothing regardless of what you do. Leaving it just as a very weak dim crap flashlight, defeating the whole idea.

Where are the instructions?

I really don’t remember instructions. I just plugged it in and it worked. Red light stays on when plugged in, if power goes out, the flashlight will come on.

How long does the battery stay charged if the flashlight is kept on a bedside table rather than plugged into an outlet?

No idea, keeping it on a bedside table totally defeats the purpose as the objective is to keep it plugged into an outlet to ensure a charge during a power outage.
