Staunton Tournament No. 6 Chessmen with 2 Extra Queens and Wooden Box, 3.9-inch Kings

Honestly I was looking at this set for awhile...even before I bought it on sale. I read some of the other reviews on here beforehand and was kinda hesitant at first. Some reviews say it's great and others say their pieces turned out horribly crooked or don't sit flat. I will say as for my experience my pieces turned out great...the sit flat and they're not horrible quality. Sure some pieces have a lil excess glue from the felt or the gloss coat on the wood was a tad over sprayed in some areas but overall these pieces are solid and attractive in my experience. I got these pieces shipped to my door for 28$ after taxes! for that price this unbelievable quality...though I imagine their QC is not the best so you're kinda rolling the dice on whether you'll get a decently made one that lays flat and such. Guess I got lucky on my first go considering some of the negative reviews on here. Got a 20x20 wooden board and they sit so nice on it!!

I am not the best at writing these reviews but here goes. If you are unsure on whether or not to get this set you should order it now. First you can't beat the price. You might come close but it won't come with a high quality box or the extra two queen pieces. Another thing to note is that the customer service at Husaria Yellow Mountain Imports could not be better. I received the chess set extremely quick but I did notice that two rook pieces were missing. I thought oh no now I have a set that really is not going to be usable but I contacted Husaria Yellow Mountain Imports directly on their website. They responded very fast stating that they were sending replacements right away and this was during the weekend. I couldn't believe it but wow what great customer service. Replacements came today and they look great just like the rest of them. I think you will like the box that comes with this set. I have purchased a set in the past that cost more and that set came with a cheap box. This comes with a really nice box to hold your chess pieces.

I built my own chessboard (2.25" squares) and was looking for a set of pieces. I wasn't sure what style I wanted so I didn't want to spend a lot yet. These pieces are a great value for the price. They are nicely weighted, and hard to accidentally knock over. The quality is really good, a few of the weights on the bottom were not inserted securely and made the pieces stand a little off, however pushing the bottom straightened them. The pieces are pretty smooth to the touch and the stain on the darker pieces is well done and not splotchy or inconsistent. Even the design of the Knight is pretty good, which is the hardest piece to make, and most of the really cheap sets had bad reviews on the knight design. The set came with an extra Queen and the box it came in is a lot better made then I expected. All in all, I think I got more than I expected for the price I paid for these, and I will probably buy another set when I make another board.

This is a nice set for the money. The No5 with 3.5” king goes great with my board which has 2” squares. The pieces seem well crafted. There are a couple of spots, such as in the horse nostrils, and slit on top of the bishop where there were some rough edges with little bits of wood hanging on. I took a file and smoothed them out because I’m anal about things like that. My biggest complaint is that whatever they weight them with sticks out beyond the bottom on some pieces, causing them not to sit flat. One of the rooks is obviously tilted to one side and wobbles anytime it’s moved or bumped. This is annoying enough that I’m planning to grind them flush and re-felt the affected pieces. The box is nice enough. It’s just plain wood, I plan to give it a coat of semi-gloss varnish so it better matches my table, board, and pieces. It also doesn’t not some with felt on the bottom so you’ll need to add some as to not scratch your tabletop. At this price point, I wasn’t expecting luxury quality, I’m happy enough with this set.

I agonized over what chess pieces to buy. I wanted quality, detail, and a sturdy weight for a price that wasn't over the top. Didn't think I could get all four. The final determining factor for me was when I zoomed in on the pictures, the knights (horses) seemed to have more detail than some other chess sets around the same price, or even ample of them priced higher. Admittedly there were some priced significantly higher that had more detail and looked prettier. But not being a chess champion (and from the looks of it not likely to ever be one barring a magic light shining in my window one night and leaving a gift), I didn't want to spend that kind of money. After ordering, I felt I made the right choice. But until they arrived, I was worried about the weight. It turned out my worries were needless. My husband and I have played numerous games with them and the weight is fine — they feel plenty sturdy. Even my husband admits I made a good purchase, well as long as I'm not beating him, ha! You never know until something arrives, if it's all it says it is. But these pieces did not disappoint. As for the box, it looks good. I admit, though, I haven't really tested it out; as I leave the pieces set up and out, ready for the next chance to triumph over my husband. Unfortunately, that doesn't always work out so well. But sometimes it does! And who knows that magic light in the window thing could yet happen.

Insufficient quality control. Poorly applied felt on bottom of some pieces and poor finish on some black (dark brown) pieces. Three stars considering the discount on Black Friday.

This company is amazing. Their chess peices are amazing. I was about to buy a whole chess set and board through the House of Staunton website (which is the standard in chess products) but the whole board and peices didn't have the exact color scheme I wanted. So I bought the board and peices seperate and found the color scheme of both board and peices that I wanted exactly. I saved $100 doing it this way and I'm very happy with the peices. This company sells house of staunton and it is great quality. I highly recommend.
