Q: How big is the gap between mount surface and the holder? Scum, mold, bacteria. Access to clean it.

It sticks directly on wall I have it high enough no water can reach it and I like it. I keep my personal face wash in it. You do get two holders. I don’t really see any room for scrubbing behind it.

Q: Can i throw this in my home compost?

It states it is compostable but my guess is it will take time to fully break down. Longer than what you may want for a ready compost to use in your garden.
