In a high tower, an Alchemist prepares potions, using vials filled with otherworldly fluids. In a sacred Grove, a druid grinds herbs for a mystical ritual. In the catacombs, a necromancer summons a bone Dragon... Welcome to the world of Res Arcana! In it, life, Death, elegant, calm, and gold are the essences that fuel the art of magic. Choose your mage, gather essences, craft unique artifacts, and use them to summon Dragons, conquer places of power, and achieve victory! In Res Arcana, each player is a mage, vying for power against their rivals. Each player has a personal deck of just 8 artifacts to work with. Can you use them efficiently to claim monuments and places of power before your rivals seize them? Designed by Tom Lehmann and richly illustrated by Julien delval, Res Arcana offers a unique gaming experience.

Review: Amazingly fun! - Designer Tom Lehmann is probably most well known for Race for the Galaxy and the number of spin-offs that franchise has produced. So when I saw Res Arcana, a game set in a fantasy setting, my interest was piqued. I did have one concern, though. Lovers and critics of Lehmann alike all agree on one thing: The man LOVES his iconography. Even the most stalwart Race for the Galaxy fan will tell you that the myriad of icons and symbols can be daunting. At first glance, Res Arcana seemed to follow this same formula. But did it follow it to a fault? Fortunately, no, it hadn't! While there is no two ways about it, the game DOES have loads of icons, all the icons are very intuitive. You get a real sense of "yeah, that probably IS how you should make an icon to represent something being placed on a card." And, what's more, included are handy reference cards so interpreting what an icon means is only a glance away, if needed. So, now that my one and only apprehension had been seamlessly dispatched by intuitive design and handy reference cards, what about the game itself? Oh, it's good. It's REAL good. Res Arcana is a game of making the most of the hand you've been dealt. Kind of like life, but fun! You see, while the game includes dozens and dozens of cards, you are only dealt eight. Eight. And with these eight cards, your goal is to get to 10 victory points by acquiring places of power, monuments, and magical artifacts. You may even summon a dragon or two along the way. Gameplay couldn't be simpler. You use cards and abilities to generate resources to obtain more cards and abilities, the goal being to build an engine of sorts that will eventually net you the 10 victory points needed to win. Sound simple? It is, but Res Arcana is deceptively deep. Should you REALLY use your resources to play another card? Or, do you use those resources to activate an ability which may pay greater dividends in the long run? And which place of power is best suited for your strategy? Which magic item do you swap for at the end of your turn? One that gives you additional resources, or one that grants you a game-altering ability? The choices are nearly limitless. In closing, I can't recommend this game enough. My review is admittedly vague and open-ended, but you know what? So is this game. It would be impossible to describe every mechanism, every strategy, every detail. All you need to know is this game is easy to learn, difficult to master, and endlessly replayable - all for under $40.
Review: Best game for engine building - Best engine builder I’ve played, easy to travel, and quick learn after the first few rounds.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can kids younger than 14 play this?**
A: Yes definitely, i’ve played with kids around 13-14 years and they are able to grasp the icons meaning. Might start slow but definitely can be done.
Its not text heavy, everything are in icons and its very intuitive.

**Q: Does the game scale well for 2 people? If not, what number is the sweet spot?**
A: It’s a great 2-player game. I would say 2 is the sweet spot. BGG actually lists it as best played with 2.
