Is it a glass door or plastic?

It is plexiglass. I use mine for a community bulletin board and am very happy with this product.

Is this completely water proof? Will be mounted on an exterior wall that will be in the elements, rain, snow and ice.

No this is not water proof nor water resistant! It is flimsy in the 48x36 size when open. There is NO gasket to make it weather resistant! This is for indoor use only. The locking cover keeps "kid fingers" off and "honest people honest". That is all. The manufacturer ship this with a minimum of package protection. Had two shipped both suffered broken cork boards rendering them useless. Product was refunded in a prompt manner. Just wish they would put it in a box to protect it.

I just want to make sure that this is, indeed, an outdoor unit that is well sealed.

We have 3 up at a community pool. They lock well and have been great. No issues with wetness or xocondnden condensation. I recommend them for sure. Best prices we found for outdoor units and have been great for the month we have had them up.

Can the door only be opened with a key or can it be left unlocked?

i would suggest always locking the door, while you can shut it without the key it will not stay shut
