Scott

My introduction into Scott Walker's work is the product of finding out some of my favorite artists' influences. If I have a favorite artist or band, like David Bowie or Radiohead, I think it is paramount to discover what musicians or their albums made an impact on their own distinctive journeys. For Bowie and Radiohead, a common thread was Scott Walker. Radiohead said that 'Creep' was their Scott Walker song and Walker was one of the inspirations for Bowie's crooning voice. Naturally I had to hunt him down and came across this exquisite album. From the bombastic opener 'Jackie', I was enthralled by the lush arrangements and some of the lyrics that were considered taboo or controversial. Already being a fan of Velvet Underground, I wasn't shocked by the content but I imagine it was risqué for its time or place. This record has such gorgeous, cinematic instrumentation and Scott's voice soars and woos over every song. Songs like 'Black Sheep Boy' and 'Plastic Palace People's does such a great job establishing a mood, a place and atmosphere, with his voice creating soothing melodrama. This album is highly recommended for those who love crooners like Sinatra, but with a bit of unorthodox lyricism.

I have said the same about the rest of this series:An excellent pressingof an excellent recordby an excellent artistat an excellent price.I have not yet heard the half speed remasters of Scott 1-4 but, it is hard to imagine it sounding that much better than this.

Scott 2 features some great songs, but as some other reviews have said, many tracks are mismatched. The cd will feature high moments of craft and lyricism, as in all the Brel covers (naturally), Windows of the World, and Plastic Palace Alice. The other songs are forgettable and just too soupy to get into. Personally, other than the songs listed, I can only recall Best of Both Worlds only for the fact that the opening notes match Dvorak's New World Symphony.But, though forgettable, the other tracks aren't offensive or unlistenable. And the majority of other songs make up for them to keep you listening to the cd the whole way through. And all serves as a harbinger for great albums to come, namely Scott 4.

"Incredible!" was the only word I could find to decribe the genius of Scott Walker's music. This is "Scott", also known as Scott 1, his first solo record which was released in 1967. Most people say this album is somewhat weaker than the rest, mostly due to MOR covers but Scott 1 still packs quite a punch with three Walker originals, and three Jacques Brel covers...My Death, Mathilde, and the classic Amsterdam. Walker's Brel covers are definitly the definitive English versions. The stunning, intentionally overblown arrangements by Wally Stott, Reg Guest and Peter Knight are sublime, combined with Scott's intriguing lyrics and deep baritone (with perfectly controlled vibrato) voice keep me coming back for more. Scott's own Montague Terrace was preview of things to come in future albums Scott 2 and Scott 3. Scott 4 took a different approach as mentioned in other reviews. Walker's deep, introspective music isn't for everyone, but for those who do enjoy it as I do, this is the type of music you want to play on the biggest sound system at the highest possible volume, I know I do. There's so much power in this music. Five Stars.

It's a real shame that the Walker Brothers weren't more popular, especially with Scott's great voice leading them. This is a great CD!

Nachdem sich Scott Engel von den kommerziell sehr erfolgreichen - aber auch kurzlebigen - Walker-Brothers abgewandt hatte (in den 70ern sollte es dann eine recht erfolgreiche, aber wiederum nur kurze Reunion geben), wurde 1967 sein erstes Solo-Album, nämlich das schlicht betitelte "Scott", veröffentlicht. Scott Walker interessierte sich für Ingmar Bergmann, Franz Kafka und Jaques Brel (dessen Texte er sogar ins Englische übersetzte) und so war es nur folgerichtig, dass er sich fortan, abseits des Teenager-Gekreisches, ernsteren Themen zuwandte.Aus heutiger Sicht - und mit Kenntnis Scott Walkers Spätwerks - ist es verblüffend, wenn man sieht, welch gewaltiger Spagat dem menschenscheuen, introvertierten Ausnahmesänger gelungen ist. Zwischen dem großen (und wunderhübschen) Walker-Brothers-Hit "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Any More" und Titeln wie etwa "The Cockfighter" (erschienen am 1995 veröffentlichten "Tilt") liegen Welten, ja ganze Sonnensysteme... Kaum jemand hat Vergleichbares im Musikgeschäft geschaffen!Nun aber zu vorliegender Platte."Scott" wirkt heute wie eine recht biedere Ansammlung von Wohlfühl-Popsongs, die aber trotz ihres Alters allesamt noch immer hervorragend funktionieren. Den Start macht das flotte "Mathilde" (übrigens eine ins Englische übertragene Brel-Komposition), das wie ein frischer Luftzug das Gemüt weckt und gleich Lust auf mehr macht. "Montague Terrace (In Blue)" ist ein wunderbar-atmosphärisches Stück und einer meiner persönlichen Alltime-Favoriten, wenn's um Scott-Walker-Songs geht. Ähnlich geht es mir bei "Angelica", das sehr schön aufgebaut ist und bei dessen Refrain Mr. Walkers Stimme ihre ganze Einzigartigkeit entfalten kann. "The Lady Came From Baltimore" ist countryesk und klingt unbeschwert und passt großartig an diese Stelle des Albums. "When Joanna Loved Me" ist vor allem textlich sehr interessant, klingt ein bisschen jazzig und lässt schon einiges von Walkers späterer noch viel ausgeprägterer Experimentierfreude durchklingen. "My Death" (wiederum eine übersetzte Brel-Komposition) ist für mich der eigentliche Höhepunkt der Scheibe. Text und Musik finden wunderbar zueinander und Walkers Hang zum Melancholischen findet hier ein wunderbares Ventil, das aber nur kurz geöffnet wird (wie Songs auf späteren Alben dann noch zeigen werden).Sehr gut gefallen mir (auf der B-Seite) außerdem noch die Walker-Eigenkreation "Such A Small Love" (das zurecht auch auf mehreren Best-Of-Compilations vorzufinden ist) sowie das schließende "Amsterdam", das Mr. Walker so überzeugend darbietet, wie es nur einem Bewunderer und Fan gelingen kann (abermals handelt es sich hier um einen Brel-Titel).In Summe ist Scott Walkers erstes Solo-Album bereits ein Meisterwerk. Vor allem die A-Seite (ich besitze sowohl eine Cd als auch die Vinyl-Ausgabe) ist ausnahmslos glänzend bestückt. Insgesamt gefällt mir "Scott" ehrlich gesagt auch ein bisschen besser als der Nachfolger "Scott 2" (das aber auch ein großartiges und besitzenswertes Album ist). Für mich klingt es ein Stück weit ausgewogener und dichter, was die Qualität der einzelnen Songs angeht, selbst wenn das nur Geschmackssache sein mag. "Scott 3", "Scott 4" sowie "'Til The Band Comes In" gehen dann schon merklich in eine etwas noch düsterere Richtung, klingen noch ein Stück weit weniger kommerziell (wobei das im Nachhinein gesehen auch nur teilweise zutrifft) und beinhalten dann größtenteils Eigenkompositionen. Den frischen Wind hiesigen Werks sucht man auf diesen späteren Erscheinungen (die allesamt aber superb sind) jedoch vergeblich. "Scott" klingt wie ein kleiner Befreiungsschlag und Mr. Walker wird sein erstes Solo-Werk wohl denn auch als einen solchen empfunden haben. Dennoch klingt alles noch recht eingängig, unabhängig davon, dass die Themen zum Teil jetzt düsterer und ernster wurden (wobei Herrn Engels Beiträge im Walker-Bros-Trio auch bereits von Schwere und Melancholie gekennzeichnet waren).Fazit: Scott Walkers Solo-Debüt ist, ebenso wie die 4 nachkommenden Veröffentlichungen (also bis zum leider immer noch eher unterschätzten "'Til The Band Comes In"), meines Erachtens eine Pflichtanschaffung für Freunde jeglicher guter Musik. Wer ein bisschen Kontrastprogramm hierzu genießen will, der sollte sich einmal Teile des Walkerschen Spätwerks (vor allem z.B. das hochinteressante "Tilt") reinziehen. Unglaublich, was dieser Ausnahmekönner zu Lebzeiten alles geschafften hat - ein Vermächtnis fürs Leben und fürs Leben danach... In diesem Sinne: RIP, Scott Walker und danke für großartige Alben wie dieses!Für mich - abseits der etwas härteren Klänge (wie etwa Iron Maiden, Soundgarden und Co.) und der ohnedies vielbesprochenen Großacts (Stones, Beatles, The Who uvvm.) - eines der besten Alben überhaupt, deshalb auch: +++++Tipp: Es gibt eine wunderbare CD-Box namens "5 Classic Albums" (mit den ersten 5 Solo-Werken Walkers), die ich Einsteigern zum Kennenlernen und Immerwiederhören wärmsten empfehlen möchte (siehe hier auf amazon)!
