Before YOU Buy a Hamster, Read This Book! The Best I've Found
Because I was in the market for new hamster habitats and living hamsters for observation, study and the most common, keeping them as pets, I binge read all the books I could find on kindle about the subject.Though I read several Kindle books on Hamsters, I found this publication "Hamsters (Animal Planet Pet Care Library) to be the most thorough, without being scientifically exhaustive and boring. My interest is currently regarding the Robo (Roborovskii's Hamster) and I needed to know a bit about their natural wild behavior and habitat as well as how to best keep them in captivity as pets. My information needs were completely met by this handy book and I felt completely prepared to take on these tiny hamsters as pets after completing every chapter. Robos are not like other hamsters. There were some odd areas where complete paragraphs repeated, but the information and guidance are sound, so easy to overlook those editing issues. All of the most common pet hamster species, complete with physical descriptions and behavioral traits, are well covered in this book. Anyone wanting to prepare for selecting the best species unique to their wants in a pet, as well as warnings regarding health and genetic problems, will find those concerns well addressed.I was completely happy with the detail level and well-rounded presentation, from feeding to treatments, behavior, to housing. So much to consider and many publications are geared towards youngsters with short attention spans. This book, in my opinion, will appeal to your studious 6th grader, as well as to the seasoned pet owner. Something for everyone and you aren't left hanging on a subject not delved into enough to satisfy the curious mind.I would LOVE a book dedicated to the study of hamsters in the wild, but for now, this book will have to suffice.I definitely recommend that this book is read prior to purchasing or adopting a hamster as a household pet. I recommend it without reservation.

Great For a First Time Hamster Owner
My daughter is 8 and I bought her this book when Santa brought her a hamster for Christmas. She loves to read and is very concerned with being a good pet mom so she was excited to read this book. She read it independently but she has a high reading level for her age. It has lots of pictures too, so if you read it to a child I think it would hold their attention. However, I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily a children’s book. It does discuss mating. It explains most everything you need to know for all types of hamsters and has general facts and other information. It is a sturdy hard cover book too. It was a good buy for us.

Most informative book on hamsters I have ever found.
This is the most informative book on hamsters I have found yet. It has great pictures and answered all of our questions and opened our minds to all the aspects of owning a hamster. This book helped us choose a hamster that was a good fit for our family. We have had our hamster for a month now and we still reference this book for any needs. I highly recommend getting this book if you are trying to educate yourself or children on hamsters and their habitats.

Good basic book; learned some stuff.
Great basic book for beginners. Worked with hamsters for over 18 years and even I learned some stuff, especially the sicknesses. Wish it was more on the nose about not using those plastic, multi-colored, clearly panders-to-kids tube-cages.

Great book!
So, when I thought about getting a hamster, I obviously needed to do some research first. I saw quite a few hamster books; I tried to compare them by page size, assuming that the more pages a book had, the better it was. The thing is, the other books looked so boring, like scientific manuals. Even if they weren't that technical, they weren't appealing. After flipping through this book in a store, I decided to go ahead and buy the thing. I saw the colorfulness and pictures, and assumed it would be aimed to kids, I could read through it, and then buy or borrow one of the more technical books to supplement any information I needed.Once I started reading the book, I realized that I wouldn't need any other book. It had a lot of information, as was easy to read, but not dumbed down. It was also full of bright pictures, which I really enjoyed (although in all honesty, a few could have been edited better). I can't own a hamster right now, but I still enjoy reading the book, and looking at the pictures. When I finally do get a hamster, I know I'll be all set, thanks to this book.

Excellent!
This a great book filled with really detailed information about all types of hamsters. This is definitely a go-to for any hamster owner and the price was really good. My 10-year old is able to read this well on her own and the pictures keep her interested.

Great Book
Purchased this for my 8 and 3 year old to use as a reference when we got our new hamster. We've been reading it non-stop. Has great intro info and some other stuff first time hamster owners might not know about. My 8 year old even took it to the store to use as we picked out food/special snacks.

Good Book for First Time Hamster Owners
I bought this book when we were planning to give my 9 year old son a hamster. The book is great to use as a reference when questions arise concerning the basic care of hamsters. My son enjoyed the book and will often share facts when we play with his hamster.

Lovely pictures but some incorrect information
some lovely pictures and very informative but unfortunately some of the information is incorrect, specifically some foods which are stated to be safe for hamsters which aren't safe.
