Men's Silver Ridge Convertible Pants

The Columbia Men's Rapid Rivers Pant is one of my favorite pairs of pants for hiking, travel, and everyday wear. The fabric is lightweight, breathable, and comfortable. Most importantly, it provides excellent sun protection, making it an ideal choice for outdoor activities in AZ. These pants offer plenty of stretch and freedom of movement, making them comfortable for long walks and other active pursuits without feeling restrictive. The fit is true to size and features a clean, versatile design that looks just as good on the trail as it does for casual outings. Another feature I appreciate is how quickly the material dries and how well it resists wrinkles, making these pants especially convenient for travel.

*SKIP TO THE BOTTOM IF YOU WANT TO READ ABOUT THE POYLESTER VERSION* I own probably half dozen of these Silver Ridge Convertible pants. Some dating back years and I'm still wearing them today. And I practically live in them! They are great pants and I love them. Lightweight yet durable. They are thin material but they hold up amazingly well. Fast drying so if you get wet you won't have to worry about having a dry pair handy. You'll be dry quick. Practical. They can easily be folded up, or for that matter just scrunched up into a ball and shoved in a backpack. They tend to easily straighten out. They never have that starchy ironed look, but never look wrinkled either. Just a nice casual lived in look. Sizing is accurate. There is zero shrinkage. The waistband has a small section on each side of the waist, hidden under the belt (included too!) that allows a little give if conditions call for it. It isn't going to be like a full elastic pair of gym shorts, but rather just a little give. Pocket sizing is good. I can easily fit a large cellphone in the thigh side pocket, yet when empty the material flattens out so it's barely noticeable. They don't have that '"cargo pants" bulky look to them. The front pockets have a mesh liner which at first I was hesitant to put anything important in (like my keys) for fear they'd fall out. But over time I've found the material and stitching to be stronger than I thought. I have yet to rip or tear any pocket, and like I said I live in these. Breathable so wearing them even in the summer heat here in Arizona works well. And keeping the UV rays off your skin is a good thing. I keep one black pair for casual appointments like a doctor visit, cookout, or maybe a meeting. A clean pair of these especially in black can actually work as casual attire. (with the right shoes and top of course). ONE IMPORTANT POINT: These are 100% nylon, and are marketed as Silver Ridge Convertible pants. If you purchase similar looking pants marketed as Silver Ridge Utility Hiking pants you will find they are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT despite looking similar and having a similar sounding name. Those are made out of 100% polyester.... not nylon. And they are no where near as good as these original nylon versions.

Great pants overall, I find them very comfortable, lightweight, very good for just lounging around the house, and especially great for summertime, outdoor activities, hiking, etc. I've been wearing these pants for years. However, the mesh pockets on a couple of mine were the first thing to wear out and develop holes a little sooner than I would have liked, when otherwise the pants were still totally wearable (the pants were less than two years old). Also, the company has gotten cheap with the belt loops... these pants used to have 7 loops, with 2 in front, 2 on the forward side, 2 on the side farther back, and 1 in back center, but they've dropped the 2 on the forward side. This leaves a bit of a gap between the front loops and the 2 on the side but farther back. They still hold the belt reasonably well, but the belt can easily fall out (slip thru the front loop) when not buckled. I know I'm being fussy but I liked them better with 7 belt loops.

My husband has been looking for another pair of these and I was happy to find them, especially on sale. They are durable, high quality pants that wash well. They last forever. They are lightweight, and versatile because they have zip off legs. The length is perfect and they have enough stretch that they fit well. The perfect pair of summer pants.

Versatile Hiking Pants That Do It All These Columbia Silver Ridge Convertible Pants have become my go-to for hiking and travel because of how practical they are. The lightweight fabric feels breathable, dries quickly, and the UPF 50 sun protection is a real plus when I’m outdoors for hours. I appreciate that they don’t feel heavy or restrictive, even when the weather heats up. The zip-off design is clever—being able to switch from full pants to shorts without carrying an extra pair saves space and weight. The zippers are smooth and placed just right, so they don’t rub uncomfortably. The fit is true to size, and I like that the waistband has some flexibility, which helps when I’m moving around or layering underneath. The multiple pockets are deep enough for essentials, and the security pocket is handy for small valuables. One thing to keep in mind: the fabric is thin, which is great for breathability, but if you’re doing rugged bushwhacking you may want something a bit more abrasion-resistant. Also, the lighter colors can show dirt quickly, though they wash up easily. Bottom line: These pants strike an excellent balance of comfort, versatility, and function. If you spend time outdoors hiking, camping, or traveling light, they’re a smart addition to your gear.

I'm a long distance thru- hiker. My weight fluctuates as I lose 20 pounds during the months on the trail and slowly gain it back before starting in these pants again. Sewn on buttons did not cut it for me. Even though mine pop when I gain weight during my off months, I prefer knowing that I have a waist button that is reliable. These deliver. Overall these pants are better constructed than the others that I have tried, and they are equally light.. Another key feature is that there is a zippered pocket on the left leg. I need to know that there is one zippered pocket. If you have extremely muscled thighs, these could be tight, but for me they work and I have average to big thighs- 5'10' 200lb as I set out. I. order the 34 waist The belt is cheap but it is fine for me and light weight. But the waist does seem to have a little give of it's own but not much. What tends to happen for me is that they are on tight side at the waist and even the thighs starting out, but after a few weeks on the trail the fit is perfect and by the second or third month, the belt is actually being used as an aide to keep them tight Bottom line they are true to size in my case..The possible drawback in construction for some, may be that there is no velcro around the ankle. In other words, you will need to take off your hiking boots while converting them into shorts or vice-versa. This is minor for me. Breaks are usually welcomed. I also like to wear them a lot when I'm not hiking. These pants are good for everyday use as well. They look good too esp. the dark colors. Highly recommended.

These were just right for hiking. Fit perfect to my son's standard measurements.

PROS: - Able to order by specific waist and inseam (not Small, Medium, Large, etc) - Size was perfect, exactly as ordered - Pockets in right places - Lightweight CONS: - Material catches easily on any pointy object - No rip-stop - Doesn't breathe well - Zipper opens around the front, should be back to allow ventilation without removing bottoms. I live in Arizona and most of my hiking is off-trail so much of my time is passing through plenty of thorny brush. This being the case, I sought pants which breathe well and shrug off brush without complaint, but these pants failed on both points. POINT #1 - Poor ventilation: I just got back from a hike on a sunny 50-55 degree day. During the hike I was climbing on steep terrain and my legs were sweating like crazy, so I thought I'd unzip the legs partway to allow some ventilation. Unfortunately, instead of beginning to open around the back to allow air flow when left slightly open, they zip around the front... totally useless when walking through thick brush. In this case, Columbia is like many other companies when it comes to real-world usability... the designers don't actually use the products. The pants I've used in the past always unzipped around the back first... guess I won't be buying any Columbia pants again. POINT #2 - Catches easily on brush,no rip-stop The first pointy bush I brushed up against caught hard, leaving an inch-long snag in the pants. Other brand pants I've worn for years usually shrug off even the 'hooks' of a cat-claw with no problem. CONCLUSION: For my type of use, I would not buy them again,nor would I recommend them to others. (Caveat: If you stick to well-defined trails, they may very well be just right for you) Actually, the only reason I bought these pants was to have something to wear until I lost enough weight to wear my regular hiking pants. I have more than enough pants to last me 3-4 years, but after being laid up for over 4 months due to back surgery, I gained 15 pounds. So until I get back in shape and lose the extra weight, I thought, great, I can order the exact waist and inseam and be on-the-trails. So... if I hadn't purchased these as a short-term solution, I would return them right now. But not expecting to be wearing them very long, it's not worth the trouble to return them.

Belt prone to loosen up requiring periodic adjustment. Feel great to wear.

Got them for hiking and a beach trip, worked well when I wanted to fresh air on the hike.

I ordered my size 44x34 and they are a little bit tight in the waist and hips and across my butt. they fit but its not the comfortable fit I'd hoped for. There is even elastic in the waist so they should fit a little loose but they just barely fit me. I've bought 3 other pair of 44 waist pants from other companies recently and they fit fine so I'd be careful buying these. Maybe buy one size larger than normal as a 44 waist fits like a 42.
