Paint Along with Jerry Yarnell Volume One - Painting Basics

Great book and author. Recommended

I like all of Jerry Yarnell's art books, and this is no exception. He discusses the basics, similar to information in his other books, especially in this series. Then he has different ten step-by-step painting projects (in oils, but useful for most other mediums as far as much of the basics). He covers mountains, skys / clouds, trees, buildings, birds, water, and similar, with his techniques readily transferable to a painting with your own subject matter. His techniques are more advanced compared to Bob Ross' Joy of Painting and similar, so could be considered a next step in one's painting education. Obviously I don't agree with some of the low ratings for this book. I've painted for decades, taught and sold oil and watercolor paintings in the past, and still value these books.

The book could use a bit more detail in the instructions. If you've seen his show(s), or had some art instruction, you'll have a better understanding of the technique and what he's talking about & be fine. Someone starting from scratch may have a few questions, but will be able to figure it out or contact Jerry on his web site. Photos are clear. The paintings he's demonstrating in the book are chosen from TV or DVD's/videos he has available. I'd suggest buying the books & DVD's together as they are a great compliment to each other. Jerry is an accomplished artist and a wonderful teacher. There's always something to learn from him and he's always willing to share the tricks of the trade to help make his students better artists.

Great painting book

I love that Jerry Yarnell is a Christian, and gives all his praise to the Lord! On top of that, the instructions he gives in this book, as well as his other books, are clear and concise. He shows how to do different techniques, and mix colors. I’m artistically challenged, but I’m already learning a lot from this book. He gives paintings to paint with step by step instructions and illustrations for each step. It’s a very good book!

If you are familiar with Jerry Yarnell from his PBS series, you will most likely enjoy this book. If you are a rank beginner, it might not be the best book, because you do not get to see a demonstration of just how it all works, but if you've seen even a couple of his TV shows or ever painted before at all, you can gain excellent insight into the basics of landscape painting. It is full of step by step instructions for painting a good variety of landscapes, from woods and water to deserts and stormy skies. It is short on words, big on pictures, telling you what to objects to paint, in what order, which brushes and techniques to use, with several excellent photographs per painting of each step involoved to produce each painting. I would hightly recommend this book to anyone interesting in landscape painting.

Great step by step instructions. If you want to learn painting techniques and proper brush strokes, this is a great book for beginners and intermediate painters.

This was the 1st book I bought by Jerry Yarnell. The book is well-written, thorough, & has great illustrations. It is full of good information that you can use in your own paintings, plus it has detailed, step by step instructions to enable you to see & apply the effects in your own work. He's a great teacher. This book is well worth the price. I love his style of painting & would definitely recommend it for a beginner or a professional artist's collection.

The book has some very easy to understand and easy to follow, step by step guide for beginners and intermediaries in painting. Good comprehensive knowledge on the do's and don'ts of painting.

This book was bought for my husband who says it is excellent. Easy to follow and very informative. Would recommend.

Easy to follow instructions, full of how to's and well presented. I will seek out other books by Jerry Yarnell.

Great for beginners, lots on info covered, great techniques. It covers brushes, paint quality and colours. Great starter book for acrylic painting.
