Great for 4Wheeling and emptying out Jerry Cans!
I hesitated to buy this, my experience with gimmick items tends to be negative. This safety siphon really gets the job done. I do a lot of 4Wheeling and often have to use 2 5 gallon Jerry Cans of extra fuel in my outings. The new models with the Carb approved spout are extremely slow to pour out the gas, and they also tend to spill when you angle it to empty out the fuel. Plus it was painful to have to carry these things as they slowly poured out. I really needed a solution, and not one that involved changing neoprene gaskets every few weeks. Enter safety siphon. I saw the videos of it working, but still was hesitant, but I figured anything is better than having to do this gassing up by hand. So, I took the plunge, when I got it, I practiced emptying out my bathroom sink with it into my bathtub. Had somewhat of a hard time getting it to work. After playing with it, I realized what I was doing wrong. Because it was shallow, it was harder to begin with, but I was stopping too early before I hear a continuous "clicking" sound from the ball inside the priming pump moving up and down on its own. Second, I had the hose too high to allow the flow to reach to the downward part of the hose so that when gravity pulled it down, it would start the vacuuming process. So, I repositioned the hose to have a more downward decline to it, and I started shaking it up again. I immediately see the water starting to flow through the hose, it got some air in there, but I keep shaking it, and then I started to hear rapid clicking from the inside ball once the water in the hose had reached the downward slope, and it started flowing out of there pretty fast. The neat thing is, it is a vacuum at that point, and you can suck out all the liquid with it all the way until it is empty and you hear what sounds like someone finishing up the last bit of a soft drink with a straw. Later I got to test it on my jerry cans, boy was it a lot easier to dump out the fuel on these. It took me less than 2 minutes to empty each 5 gallon can. I am very happy with this product, no spills, no having to lift the heavy cans and hold them there for the roughly 5 minutes it would take to empty one out. I highly recommend it, and don't get frustrated during the learning process. I almost did!

Safety Siphon – The Real Deal
This review is intended to those who transfer gasoline from CARB compliant gas cans. You are a frustrated group who has to manhandle 40 lb, 5-gallon cans of gas while trying to finesse the CARB nozzles to open up and allow the fill to happen. These new nozzles are intended to reduce hydrocarbon emissions but they do the opposite. The CARB nozzles are so hard to use and actually lead to more gasoline spillage than the old system. These el cheapo plastic nozzles are not intended to withstand 40 lb side load, which causes them to deform and leak. The rate of flow is excruciatingly slow, adding to the frustration. I often wondered why something so stupid remains in the market. Tree huggers who thought they had a win are screwed because the CARB compliant nozzles hurt the environment more. Aha, enter the Safety Siphon to save the day! To empty a 5-gallon can of gas into a vehicle, just place the can on a small step ladder (3’ high). Feed the PVC hose into the gas filler pipe deep so that its exit is below the liquid level in the gas can. Open up the gas can, insert the action end of the Safety Siphon and off you go! Once flow is established just watch it work. At some point in the transfer, the flow slows. Just pick up the can, which is much lighter to complete the transfer by increasing the elevation difference. At the end, tilting the tank allows almost complete emptying. When the flow stops, lift the action end of the Safety Siphon and drain the gasoline retained in the PVC tube into the vehicle. Such a simple device saves so much work and eliminates frustration.

perfect to siphon gas from can to car
Just used this to transfer 5 gal can full of gas to my late-model car, worked fast and perfectly...didnt spill a single drop, and probably only left 1/4 cup or so in the can after I held it up at angle as it was getting near empty. I had worried that the plastic (vinyl, or whatever the material is) hose might not be stiff enough to force past the anti-siphon/roll-over flapper valve in the tank's "fill pipe", but it was no problem at all. Also had been worried that if the hose material was flimsy it would deteriorate after exposure to gas, but as thick as this material is I dont think that will be a problem. There is a video on Utube showing a guy sitting a 5 gal plastic can up on a car's trunk (towel underneath to prevent scratches) and that gave the siphon plenty enough elevation from can to car tank for a strong flow, and I can confirm as much cause thats exactly what I did. Didnt time the process but the flow started immediately and the tank was empty in surely less than 3 minutes. To get gas from a FULL or nearly full can into a car tank, there cant be a simpler, easier way to do it. Be advised the physics involved: you need to have enough depth of fluid that you are sticking the valve into to give you room for at least 5-6" (I'm guessing) of motion for you to keep the valve completely submerged; if you were to try to get it going in a partially filled can, you might not get the flow started, or at least not easily started.

Great product, but....
These things REALLY WORK! I tested mine yesterday by siphoning 5 gal. of fuel from my roof rack to my tank. It took about four jogs of the valve to get the siphon going and less than a minute to finish the transfer. But... the supplied hose is that vinyl stuff that doesn't become flexible at less than about 100F. I immediately replaced it with some used vinyl beer line that remains flexible down to below freezing. If you can, buy the valve and skip the hose.

The Perfect Economy Siphon!
The Perfect Economy Siphon! I Chose this Siphon because I wanted something inexpensive but durable.I was NOT disappointed. All of the other economy models... oh wait, I didn't really find any other economy Models. What I did find were a lot of "cheap" self suction type that included a bulb, which of course, cracks with use. When I use the term "Economy" I mean something that is of good value but is not over priced. "Cheap" To me means the cost far outweighs the items value. Thank you for the Demonstration Video! I would not have even bought this because I couldn't tell how it worked from the package. I kept looking for the squeeze bulb. Then I watched the Instructional Video, it was so simple I couldn't believe it. I am a Gardener with many rain barrels but none have Spigots. This works beautifully. Here is a Hint that works well for me too, I dunk the entire tube into the water and let it fill up. Then I take the "Spout" end out with my finger covering it so the water does not escape. I am careful to make sure the "Suction" end stays below the water as I lower the Spout to the receptacle. When I have the Spout as low to the ground as I can get it, I bring the Suction end to the upper 1/3 of the barrel. Then I just let go of the Spout and the Suction is caused by the water emptying from the hose. Viola' My Watering Can fills. I Highly Recommend this Siphon. But if you have never used it, don't throw it in the trunk or your disaster kit and try to learn to use it in an emergency. You are bound to have bad results, through no fault of its own. Make Friends with it, you will find a lot of uses and soon be ordering extras. The materials it is constructed with look well made and feel durable. 5 Stars!

Works like it should
I bought this about a week ago, used it on 4 jerry cans already. I can see a lot of people not following instructions and not getting it to work. I've primed water pump 1000's of times, it works the same way as priming an intake hose with a foot valve. Don't shake it around side to side, it works by "jerking it off" lol. The up/down motion pushes the glass ball in and lets fluid into the hose until it fills up and starts to flow out the other end. You can hear the glass ball rolling around when it's siphoning so you know it's working. I do a lot of driving in the bush and gas is a lot cheaper for me to buy in town on the weekends then out in the area where I work, so I travel with 6 five gallon gas cans all the time. This saves me a lot of time and effort, now I can just sit in the back of my truck and move the valve from one can to another. Edit Jan 12, 2012 - As the weather started to get colder I started to worry about how well the hose would bend when frozen. I haven't used it as much since the beginning of December since I'm now working in town and not spending as much time in the field. I'm happy to say that even in -20 degrees Celsius temperature, I was still able to grab the siphon out of my storage box in my truck bed and siphon gas out of some gas cans into my truck. It was stiff but it didn't crack when I straightened it out to use it.

Fantastic!
This is amazing how easy it works! A couple of shakes is all it takes. It's also made in the USA. No pump bladder to keep squeezing and hoping you can get enough suction. I am really impressed how well this works. Will be buying more, they are that good.

Simple physics in action
Simple to use, works well. Draining oil after use takes some time. (Make sure before storing it)

Excellent purchase
This syphoning hose keeps you from putting your mouth over and sucking to get gasoline out of a container. It has a little glass valve that you shake up and down which starts the syphoning process. It is just what I was looking for and I am happy with the product. And not only used for gasoline but I think you could use it for almost any fluid water, diesel, but probably not oil.
