Easy to use, works like a charm
I just opened the box, used the cord it came with to plug into my computer, and was good to go. I use a Mac, and I found very easy instructions for getting hard drive to work with a mac: 1. Plug in the drive via USB connection 2. Go to APPLICATIONS -> UTILITIES -> DISK UTILITY 3. Click on the hard drive icon located at the very top left sidebar 4. Select the ERASE tab and FORMAT in Max OSX Extended (Journaled). Assign your drive a name if you wish. Once I did that, I was easily able to click and drag folders, documents, photos, whatever over into the hard drive, no sweat. The device is really small too, so it's easy to store away in a drawer or wherever you want to keep it. Overall, this product is ideal for someone who wants a simple, basic external hard drive that's easy to use and gets the job done.

Nice little device
Wrote my review of this item on the external DVD burner I bought, but oh we'll, I digress. Nice and small design so you can take it almost anywhere. Holds a good amount of space, ideal solution for my 128gb SSD ultrabook. Easy to back up and retrieve data. Many nice features, especially the locking mechanism.

Good backup tool but won't "disk image".. :(
I've had this for about 6 weeks now. Works well. First, I don't have it on all the time to constantly backup my files, but I do it once a week or so. No problem there, as it's easy to customize the folders to be monitored and backed up, including the last couple (or more versions of a file). Restoring a file seems easy though I haven't had the need to do so. I backed up all my photos and songs of several gigabytes. My Docs folder is much smaller, so in all I've got my 500GB drive about 40% full at this point. I should have spent a little more for 1TB drive. But, my only though serious peeve is that this does not come with a program that makes a disk image. As someone who had hard disk failure before a couple times, having a disk image and reinstalling everything including customized windows is worth gold, for me anyway. That's the reason I'm not giving this Passport a 5 star rating. I work for a college and the school would replace my laptop or hard drive in such an event, plus they'll give me all the programs I need for free, however, having a backup drive like this one to dump everything I have onto the new computer or hard disk would be soooooo much easier. I don't understand why WD doesn't include such a program.

Nice little drive
Good Price, Quiet, Extremely compact, and very fast (especially w/ USB 3.0). Used it to transfer files from my work PC to my new MacBook Pro (just make sure you format to ex-fat) No issues reading and writhing to both OS's. Not much more you can ask for.

This was waaaay too easy
Due to the nature of my work, I use a 10-year-old Panasonic CF-29 "Toughbook" military-style up-armored laptop with just 36 GB of internal hard drive space. In a rare moment of clarity I ordered the My Passport Ultra 500 GB drive. It arrived two days later. I guess I was conditioned to expect something with the size and heft of construction equipment, not an electronic toaster pastry. And there were no instructions. I quickly discovered why. They aren't needed. You plug it in and it works. That's not supposed to happen, right? Further, it's faster than my internal drive. Which, now that it has a little elbow room because it's been reduced to app-handling duty, is also a bit faster. Everything transferred in under four minutes. And when I clicked on the stuff I'd just parked next door, it instantly found the related app back there on the internal drive without having to ask a bunch of annoying questions or forcing me to go off and look for it. Yeah, the case is plastic. But so is my knee. So is just about everything these days. The case is fine. The drive is fine. My laptop is fine. And all this fine-ness is mine for under $60. So I'm fine. This was a good buy.

Very handy, but not 500GB
Works perfectly for my needs, even with my older laptop. My only gripe is that it's advertised as having 500GB of storage, but it comes with a bunch of files preloaded on it, taking the actual free space down to about 465GB. I suppose t's a negligible difference, yes, and I could probably delete some of those folders if I knew what I was doing, but it's still something you should be aware of.

Great hard drive
I bought this hard drive 2013 It's 2024 I have used it a handful of times. I can plug it in today and works like a champ. It has perfect speed does not has its own power source. The size is enough in my opinion for personal use. You able to create password to access it

Where to begin.....
So you can't choose which files you want to copy to it, it does basically whatever it wants. The most you can do is click on documents, or pictures, etc & it copies ALL OF THEM -_- Definitely not what I had in mind, I only wanted certain files to go on this thing & you just can't control it. Next time I'll just purchase a Seagate, this was a complete waste of not only money but TIME! Damn thing took just about 2 days to get files in it & once it starts you can't really stop it w/o causing file corruption. Take my advice people, save your money for something better.

This is a really good purchase! I just wish it came with a little case so that I can take it with me without being scared it breaks! But everything is just perfect about it :)

I've been using this little external as a backup for my Macbook files and to transfer large files from my desktop to my laptop. I've had it for 3 years and never had an issue with it. It's still going strong. It works with Mac and Windows out of the box.
