Big Bang, Small Package
Replaced my DVD-RW (another Pioneer) to enable Blu-Ray playback/burning. Mostly playback, as BD discs are still cost-prohibitive. Really - after all this time?Looks like Pio quality is still topnotch. No problems out of the box, connected the cables and Win7 did the rest. Fired up Nero and ran some tests. CD and DVD write times are a tad slower than my old drive, but not enough to be an issue. Zero errors with Verbatim blanks. Burned CD-RW audio discs for the car perfectly, something that was hit-or-miss with my old drive. No duds out of a 10-pack. Burning data BDs was pretty slow, but this isn't a problem - I usually burn these at slower speeds anyway. BD movie playback is excellent - smooth, quiet, reliable. Spins up fast, too - seems like a very refined piece. The bundled software is a nice perk, has all the basics to get you started. I actually prefer CyberLink's BD player to the the finnicky player in Nero. Awfully pricey (even on Amazon), but if it lasts that's a moot point.

I love these Blu-ray writers
I love these Blu-ray writers, players! I use them extensively, running three at a time in two different PC's. They are extremely quiet and I've never had a bad burn yet using them. They seem to work on all formats and are well worth the price and are super simple to install, using no installation discs or drives, my computers recognized them immediately. Highly recommended! UPDATE: After burning around 800 - 900 discs the tray stopped opening and closing so I replaced with a new unit and again after a couple years the same thing happened. Over time I went through five of these burners with the same outcome. Instead of throwing them out I saved them hoping for a fix. I was told about a pinhole that I could put a paperclip in to open the tray and BINGO, it worked! Now I can still use all the ones I thought were dead and they burn all my DVD's and Blu-rays perfectly. Even with the tray problem I wouldn't buy any other.

Great burner, speedy and accurate
very good burner, but lousy installation instructions and tech supportFYI… must remove it's tray faceplate to install in many tower units by partially opening the slide tray, turning unit upside down, RIGIDLY supporting slide and tapping DOWNWARD on both ends of faceplate, though tech support will disavow knowledge of it. The plate is tightly secured, so moderate tapping force is needed. This is an internal drive, so I have no idea why the faceplate was installed to begin with, or why Pioneer tech support denies knowledge of the need to remove it. Note to owners of older tower units: you may need to purchase a SATA-to-ATA converter to install this burner (available online through many suppliers, though Pioneer tech support has apparently never heard of these converters).

Pioneer has the best BD writers and this model BDR-2209 this model is ...
Fast, reliable and incredibly silent. Already burned 20 BD's, most 50gb, in 10 days and works perfectly. It replaces an LG BH16NS40 that broken in six months of use. Previously had a Pioneer BDR-206 that still reading, but not writing. Pioneer has the best BD writers and this model BDR-2209 is no exception, it's a top quality drive.

Generally suspicious of BDRs, but the BDR-209UBK works well for me.
Very pleased with the speed and performance of the BDR-2209 / BDR-209UBK. After buying a dud, I have been suspicious about any BDR, but I needed one, so I ventured into the wilderness once more. I thought I would save a few bucks with the BDR-209DBK, but soon after ordering I read a review on the BDR-209UBK by someone who evidently goes through BDRs like tissue paper while building multi-BDR servers. This person vouched for BDR-209UBK's reliability, which was enough for me to exchange the BDR-209DBK when it arrived for the BDR-209UBK. I've been consistently pleased after five months ripping BDs and DVDs at HD and SD. Ripping BDs with MakeMKV, the BDR-209UBK tops out near 8x, and for DVDs I think I've seen it around 14x, which is about as advertised. The BDR-209UBK also plays Blu-Rays with VLC as long as the appropriate digital decoding driver is installed. I'm still suspicious of BDRs, but my BDR-209UBK has been a winner so far. I have not, however, burned anything yet.

Beware counterfeit devices
I received my "Pioneer BDR-2209" yesterday and had the same problem reported by one other reviewer. The box wasn't sealed so I was a little suspicious. The box looked authentic and was labeled BDR-2209 but the model number on the actual drive was BDR-209UBK/XV52. A quick check of the Pioneer website shows that they don't manufacture a model 209UBK/XV52. And another google search showed that a Hong Kong manufacturer is shipping these out even though the device label says it was manufactured in Japan. My order was fulfilled through a different vendor than the one the other reviewer reported so it seems like these counterfeits are coming through multiple channels.Thank goodness Amazon gave me a full refund with no issues. So kudos to Amazon for customer service. I went to the Pioneer USA website and ordered a BDR-2208 directly from them so there won't be any problems.By the way, the Pioneer USA website still lists the BDR-2209 for $99 but you can't order it right now. The BDR-2208 is basically the same drive but slightly slower (15x vs 16x) and is discounted to $89.

Dont judge the drive by the junk software bundle
I am not sure how to rate this. The Cyberlynk Software that came with it is junk and the only thing it does is say "You must update this software to watch movies" After 6 times of clicking UPDATE, I went to the Cyberlynk Webpage and downloaded "The PATCH" that was supposed to be the upgrade, but it has never succeeded to play a disk. All it does is tell me to update the software. So, I do not even know if it plays BluRays at all.

Very good BR burner
This BR writer is great. I've burned a dozen or more HD videos on to BR disks since I got it last month and I haven't had any issues with the drive at all. I replaced a CD/DVD burner in my desktop with this one and it works just as well as the old one. Reads CD's, plays DVD's, burns BR's and plays them. An hour and a half video will take about 40 minutes to put on a disk using PowerDirector 15. Some mentioned that it was loud when burning but I sit right next to my machine and I don't find it excessively loud or annoying. It just sounds like its working. If I didn't hear anything, I'd be worried. I hope it continues to work well.

but so far this drive is awesome.
I bought this player along with a Vantec External Blu Ray enclosure in order to replace the ASUS external Blu Ray drive that was painfully slow and took forever to load Blu Ray movies, if at all. This drive worked flawlessly out of the box. I plugged in a Blu Ray movie into the drive and it loaded almost instantly. I haven't used it for burning yet, and if I do and I run into any problems I will amend this review, but so far this drive is awesome.
