Poppy: The Classic Brave Mouse Story About Courage, Survival, and Standing Up to Danger

Great little story with plenty of lessons about truth, lying, courage, and community. The youngest raiders make have trouble with the death of some characters. These are the kinds of books that build character in young lives. I started this series with this book and we'll have to go back with the beginning of the series

While entertaining and engaging, this book also supports the study of the FOOD CHAIN, environments/homes /diets of animals of woodand animals. The plot is exciting and children may predict what will happen next. The characters are interesting and entertaining. I read this to my elementary classes each year. It's perfect for homeschooling - and rolling more subjects into one activity! I will soon read it on FaceTime with my granddaughter who homeschools. I personally LOVE the book and so did my students. It's also good for a bedtime or naptime read at home! I'd suggest it for 4th grade through 6th. If you're reading it aloud, change your voice for each main character. We also dissected owl pellets when we finished the book for a science project! (Order sterilized pellets from a lab - do not use pellets collected from the woods.)

A must read! Such a great book and my fourth graders loved it! Would recommend to any young readers in elementary.

My oldest daughter 16 now and I read this book when she was 8 years old it was such a good memory So my younger daughters are 6 and 8 now and I thought it would be fun to read with them When it showed up my oldest daughter was so exited and couldn't wait to be a part of reading it again with us This is such a good book and can provide years of good memories

I vaguely remember greatly enjoying this book when I was young and decided to read it for a challenge this year. I'm glad I did as I was enchanted by the book again. The story follows a deer mouse named Poppy. She and her boyfriend defy the local law of asking the resident owl of the neighborhood, Mr. Ocax, permission to move beyond the house they live in. As a result, her boyfriend is killed and eaten by Mr. Ocax. Immediately after, Poppy's father decides the family has gotten too big for the abandoned house they live in and seeks to petition Mr. Ocax for permission to move to New House up the road some. When Mr. Ocax denies his permission, Poppy sets out on an adventure to find out what Mr. Ocax is hiding about New House. I think this is a fantastic book for children, but maybe not those too young or those that would be greatly disturbed by the death of a character (especially one who was the focus of the first book in the series). This would be particularly good for young girls. It teaches lessons on believing in yourself and fighting against the bad people. There are also the standard lessons of making friends and making good on your word. Also, there is a lesson on not believing everything you are told until you find out the facts for yourself. The writing style is very fluid and the language is wonderful. There is no shortage of interesting words or vocabulary to help a youngster's vocabulary grow. It was honestly a delightful book that I enjoyed reading and was able to still, as an adult, feel for the characters and get pulled into the story. There is one character that is actually quite hilarious for adults to read as he has an adult's view of young people. The old man is quite entertaining in his interactions with Poppy and other creatures throughout the book. All-in-all a good read and would make good bedtime stories for the older children.

My 7 year old loved this book. We read it aloud together for our home school literature and it has been his favorite so far this year. We read The Tale of Despereaux first this year and it was too slow for him, but Poppy was engaging. His favorite character was Ereth. This was our first book from the series, so we did T have any attachment to the character Ragweed and didn’t experience his death as “tragically” as others are reviewing. It’s abrupt and it sets the stage for the drama of the book. My son, at 7, was not disturbed by this in the slightest, nor the epic battle at the end. That was in fact why he lived this book. He plays a lot of video games and he’s always on board for a hero and villain face off. We just talked about the sad parts and discussed the motives of the characters as we read the book and that was sufficient for him.

Poppy is a wonderful story about doing things that are against the rules, suffering consequences, and trying to bravely right a wrong. It is about working outside the box , even with fear, to learn the truth. The child this was read with is almost 9. The vocabulary can be challenging but having the dictionary in Kindle , has him looking up unfamiliar words! Win, win. Talking about how he would deal with these tough situations, and wring about his life experiences transfers to really understanding the characters. We have really enjoyed reading this. Thanks.

The book was printed well. My grandkids (age 7 and 4) were not overly affected by the plot line, where a main character dies early on. i checked with their mom about that before choosing the book. But, they had read other stories with death and also studied animals and understand animals eat other animals. After we read the first few chapters, they “played” being owls swooping and capturing mice. It is an interesting story and kept my grandchildren’s interest. I recommend this book.
