Scrawl: A Novel

Brillant
I purchased this book to read along with my 13 year old nephew as it was on his summer reading list. Never thinking that I would learn as much and enjoy it as much as he did. This is the story of a young man who comes from very limited circumstances who attends a school that is also attended by other kids who come from privileged homes. He is placed into detention and the teacher tasks him with writing a journal. The brilliant part of this book is that we see his growth based on his writing in the journal. It is a book of self-discovery for both him and us as readers of the book.I am so grateful to have read this book and even more happy to have shared this with my nephew who loved it just as much.Great read!!!!

While the book is a bit slow in places, the surprise at the end made up for it. I had to read it twice. Rarely does a story catch me off guard. Can't wait for some of my students to dive in.

A fun read
Interesting and not as boring as most summer books. A cool and different way of telling a story which was very intriguing.

Great book
I like how the book was different from the rest. The book made me feel like the teacher, reading the notebook. The book was well written and would definitely recommend this book to all incoming 8th graders.

Perfect for a middle school level read aloud
My students looked forward to hearing this each and every day and, more importantly, "Scrawling" afterwards for at least fifteen minutes. It has made journaling something my kids look forward to each and every day.
