I got it because one of my cats seemed to be losing weight and I wanted to keep track. It works well for weighing a cat and the area for standing the cat on is quite large. I think it would work for a small dog also (or a baby or small child). You can take it apart easily (just 3 pieces) and store it on a shelf. It has been perfect to track the monthly weight progression of my two new kittens who are now going on one year old. When we go to the vet, I always plop them on this scale before going to see how accurate it is and it is right on the money...every time. Update 11/12/21: I still LOVE this scale after having it two years. I use it weekly for one of my senior cats who has kidney disease and losing weight and also weigh all the cats once a month to make sure they are on track. I weigh the cats prior to going to the vet for scale accuracy and only one time it was off by .1 of a pound. We were a bit skeptical that a 220 pound maximum scale would weigh her accurately, but her 14 pound range is indeed accurately measured. The scale bed is sufficiently wide and long for her size and would probably meet the needs of a small dog as well. To stabilize her on the scale we place a small sleeping pillow in the scale and tare that before the weight measure. We ensure the scale is measuring accurately by weighing a known constant - two one-gallon jugs of water that weigh 17.2 pounds total.
