La Misma Cancion 1998USA Titulos Cortesia: Musica Tierra Caliente, Gracias. 6/21/XIX .com Multiculti Los Angeles-based 10-piece Ozomatli is more than the sum of their parts: hip-hop, salsa, and funk crash head-on in this surprisingly natural collaboration. Their self-titled debut makes Ozomatli sound like one of the world's great live shows--a party band with a brain--and they pull it off deftly. Rapper Chali 2na ("Charlie Tuna," get it?) has an authoritative voice and a way with words, mixing references from Edie Brickell to Ed McMahon; just he and the Cut Chemist (both of Jurassic 5), who lends his turntable skills to the proceedings, would make for an entertaining album. But it's the way that the two--when they're even featured--build on and blend into the grooves of the wah-pedal-and-brass-section-powered ensemble that sets Ozomatli apart. Danceable and engaging, they've made a promising debut. --Randy Silver Review Ozomatli's 11 multihued Angelenos bring the notion to life. Drawing on Cali tradition of Latin-funk big bands like Malo, Azteca, and War ... Ozo combine Chicano protest ethos, the unstoppable power of ska, and, with the lab-wrecking virtuosity of DJ Cut Chemist, leading-edge hip hop. -- VibeThis L.A. band's lineup may not be solely Latin ... but there is the joy of a great block party and the kind of unbending toast to the human spirit that makes the group a worthy descendant of [Los] Lobos. -- The Los Angeles Times

Still the best!
Downloading this album was the 19th time I've purchased it, and I'd glad buy it again. Brings back memories of the first time I heard/met this wonderful band. So many musical styles are traversed with ease that people always ask, by the second or third song, "Is this the same band?". In addition to the amazing band members, there's also some cameos from Dave Hidalgo of Los Lobos on accordion & requinto and Tylana from Quetzal on violin. Obviously, Ozomatli has grown and gone forward to do some pretty big things in music, but this album is absolutely timeless in the sense of what it gave, and still gives to the listener, the generation, and the culture. A must have.

Ozomatli is in the house - don't you know that by now?
I love this CD - there's a lot more to it than any record I've heard for some time. A ton of different styles are here - from the good-time sunny day party music that's so fun (Como Ves) to some for-real knowledge about our world (Coming War) to fantasic tomfoolery with the mixer (Cut Chemist Suite). Plus, I'm hearing some beautiful guitar work - not unlike the repetitive style from west African high-life - and of course Latino styles a-plenty along with just amazing lyricism and beats. Everything goes well with everything - you will believe it when you hear it.

The Fugazi of Hip Hop
....Ozo is so musically deep that you may never look at your CD collection the same way after you play this a couple of times. Amazingly versatile, they jump from Hip Hop to Salsa; from Grandmaster Flash to Santana. Ozomatli is the Hip Hop equivalent to Fugazi in that they don't stick in any one genre for too long, but more like fuze elements from many different styles all at once. I could go on, but I don't really think that writing about this musically revolutionary masterpiece can do it justice. Get it, and I'm sure you'll agree.
