In all practical sense, considering its massive weight, can this miter saw be used without mounting at all just by letting it sit on a table?

Yes, I have an earlier version of this miter saw (I think it is a DW705) and it has been sitting on my workbench for 20-some years. I like that it is not bolted down because I occasionally have to move it a foot or so to the left or right to accommodate long boards.

Can i cutt through black iron or steel pipes like a band saw would?

For your applications, a chop saw would be a better recommendation. The DWS715 can cut metal, when equip with the appropriate blade, however. The quality of the cut will not compare to that of a band saw.
