In a Victorian mansion on the outskirts of Gloomsville lives Ruby Gloom and her off-beat circle of friends. Some kids might be afraid of the dark, the eccentric neighbours and the unknown things that dwell in the closet. But Ruby is different she befriends these strange and sometimes scary creatures. In fact Ruby finds them all delightful. She pays no attention to their unusual appearances, perceptive only to their hearts and souls. Ruby is the happiest girl in the world, always trying to be cheerful in the face of gloom! Rubys perfect day is a gloomy one, full of creativity and adventure with her offbeat circle of friends. Ruby Gloom is an ironic comedy with an emphasis on the importance of friendship.

I even put off restocking my first aid kits to watch it...
I never actually saw this series when it was shown in the UK, but I rarely watch TV these days. It was actually a chance viewing of an episode on YouTube that got me interested in this series, and I haven't regretted anything yet. Well, that's not totally true, but I'll explain.Ruby Gloom started as a line of greetings goods or something like that which was eventually turned into this series of animations by Nelvana of Canada. Ruby is a kind hearted, somewhat sensible type living in an old mansion in a town called Gloomsville surrounded by various weird characters for whom she often acts as their sanity anchor. Examples include Iris, the thrill seeking cyclops girl for whom enough is never enough; Misery, a girl that you might think is the most unlucky, morose, accident prone person in the world until you discover a dry wit and a warm heart; Skull Boy, a skeleton that is always in search of his true identity and Scaredy Bat, a bat that lives up to his name in every way. This DVD features four stories from the start of the series - one where Misery, Iris, Skull Boy and Frank & Len (a two headed boy band!) think that Ruby is moving out, another where Iris takes up bouncing after finding some springs and ends up visiting the other side of the world and so on. These are all great stories, so it is a great pity that only eight episodes, four on this DVD and four on the "Misery Loves Company" DVD, are the only episodes out of the forty that were made that you can currently buy outside Canada.

Ow.
I've reviewed the other DVD already, but in case you missed it, Ruby Gloom started life in greetings cards and other merchandise before moving to animation. Only eight episodes out of the forty made are available on DVD as of writing this, four on this DVD and four more on the "Grounded in Gloomsville" DVD. While that DVD concentrates on the first four episodes, this DVD bounces around the series a bit, including one of my favourite episodes, the titular "Misery Loves Company" when Ruby surprises Misery by inviting her two cousins, Malady and Malaise, to attend a party to celebrate her anniversary of being rescued from an ice floe. The problem is that Misery's cousins are cold. Literally!I really believe that both these DVDs are a must see. They are witty and well drawn, my only criticism is that the series hasn't merited a box set (and a decent release in my own country, thank you very much!)

delightful Surprise!!!
I admit I have hopped onto the Ruby Gloom Band wagon Perhaps a little too late. Because most Merchandising has been sold. but I have Net Flix to thank for introducing me to this delightful series, which has brought quiet literally the light side of the dark side to children and Adults alike. one can't help but falling in love with these quirky characters, especially Misery who's a walking Murphy's Law!

Warm, Funny, and Upbeat
I can't quite put my finger on exactly what makes this kids' show so enjoyable. But it's warm, funny, and upbeat. The situations are silly - and the characters mostly sillier, but I always come away from watching a couple of episodes feeling a little better about the world. Definitely a great show for younger kids… and for grown-ups tired of formulaic superhero cartoons.

Look On The Bright Side!
Finally! A North American release of this wonderful cartoon! This DVD contains the first four episodes of the show (Gloomer Rumor, Grounded In Gloomsville, Doom With A View, and Missing Buns), along with a bonus episode of "Jane & The Dragon". As if the episodes themselves weren't great enough (and trust me, they ARE), among the special features on this disc are some behind-the-scenes looks at the episode "Hair(less): The Musical"! An excellent addition to an already excellent package, no doubt about it.I would highly recommend this DVD for fans of any of the following: family films with a unique sense of humor, semi-gothic characters a la Tim Burton, great voice acting, and high-quality animation. If any of these fit you, grab a copy of this right away! If you were lucky enough to pre-order this item, you'd have gotten away with $13.99 CDN (an absolute steal for the bonus features!); now the list price is $19.99 CDN, which still isn't that bad, pretty standard for most new releases.Consider this customer completely satisfied. You can bet I'll be first in line to order the next volume of the series! Hopefully enough it'll come out soon!

Misery Loves Company, This Company Loves Misery
Fans have been waiting a long six months for the release of this new DVD package from Nelvana, and their wait was worth it!This DVD contains four more episodes (though not in chronological order, they are "Iris Springs Eternal", "Poe-Ranoia", "Skull Boys Don't Cry" and "Misery Loves Company"), all of which have been restored to their original glorious 16x9 widescreen quality. Amazingly enough, there is but a single advertisement on the whole disc, and it's a static image that loads just before the Main Menu. Sadly, this also means there are all of zero special features on this compilation. But still, a perfect audio/video presentation make up for this lack of features. If you're shopping for your kids, make a mental note that this show is something both you and your kids can enjoy together. There's a lot of humour present that will fly over the heads of younger minds, which isn't often the case with most cartoons these days. Think 1960's Addams Family, that may give you a clue.Fans, buy this DVD right now! Nelvana isn't producing any new episodes at the moment, and perhaps all they need is a surge of DVD sales to point them in the right direction! I'll be standing line for the next release, count on it!

Another perfect presentation
This is the second DVD release for Ruby Gloom (the first being "Grounded in Gloomsville"). Note that the first DVD included the first 4 episodes of the series, whereas this DVD has the following 4 episodes:- #5 "Iris Springs Eternal"- #7 "Poe-ranoia"- #10 "Skull Boys Don't Cry"- #18 "Misery Loves Company"The packaging style remains the same as the first DVD's (and is predominately red, instead of purple). The first DVD had included a glossy slip-cover to fit over the case, but this time there is no included slip-cover, so they must have decided not to manufacture them (that or mine's missing). As before, the episodes are in their correct aspect ratio of 1.85:1 (fills a 16x9 widescreen TV) since the show is animated in widescreen but airs in 1.33:1 "full screen" 4x3 ratio (when aired, the sides of the widescreen image are cut off to create a "full screen" image). The video quality on the DVD release is excellent as with the previous release. There are absolutely no faults to find. The English audio is in Dolby Digital 5.1 as before, and clearly benefits from having discrete sound separation and makes full use of it. An additional French Dolby Digital 2.0 is also included. The menus on this disc are once again in 16x9 widescreen and easy to navigate. The main menu is a static image and the audio is an instrumental version of the show's theme song, while the episode selection sub-menu uses a piece of background music taken from the show. Unfortunately there are no special features on this release.Even though the episodes are now out of order on the DVDs, fans should definitely pick this one up since the audio/video presentation is magnificent. For new viewers, the episodes do not really need to be seen in order anyway, so I highly recommend it for anyone that is a fan of animation, goth-style imagery, or simply comedy that's enjoyable for both kids and adults.

AWESOME!
This is an excellent series! The show is truly funny and unique and it has an incredible opening sequence with the catchiest little tune (For which I still have it in my head days later!). I Simply love it and I can't wait to see more! :-)

Trop top !
Je l'ai commandé pour un petit garçon (5 ans). J'avais un peu peur que ce soit trop "fille". Mais non, il y en pour tout le monde : Diversité des personnages, beaucoup d'humour, et surtout une musique qu'il adore !
