I use a similar size pipe and am feeding a small header pond approx. 1 mtr above the pump. I have to keep the flow throttled right back. As a general rule, if you are feeding a feature which has a narrow channel for the water to flow down, you need to keep the flow rate low. If you have a wider channel, it will handle a higher flow rate. You can get plastic valves from aquatic centres. I tried one initially but it was difficult to get a fine control of the flow. It is the same design and, once set up, works well. Would be a lot easier to set up if there was a plug attached, but not much of a problem as able to use the one on the original pump (points for forcing the recycling of the plug!).The flow is consistent after a few weeks of use.
