Q: Can house sparrows use this feeder, i don't want to buy it if they can??

Absolutely - as can blackbirds. I wish only the birds advertised would use this feeder but all birds can eat from it. Save your money and buy a simple suet cage.

Q: What is the best way and location to hang this?

Being an older single woman I tried to do it the easiest way-which worked. I used two bungee cords to attach it to a tree. The bungee cords also make it easy to refill the basket. I have a great picture that shows a flicker and one of the cords, but it won't let me attach it.

Q: does the roof snap/lock shut so squirrels can't get in ?

We use a Havahart # 1083 trap to keep the squirrels out of our bird feeders. This is the best squirrel trap you will find. Much easier to set, easier to bait and you don' catch any small birds in it.

Q: Will it deter crows? Also, will Pileated woodpeckers still use it?

I got it to thwart crows and blackbirds from emptying my feeders in minutes. I love this feeder. Woodpeckers, chickadees, and a few others love it. I don’t have Pilates around.
