UPDATED: Quality value for the money. Recommended but only for small rooms with limited traffic.
Original title: Is this thing even working? - Maybe a Pass? This is my first ever air purifier but its really hard to tell if this is even doing anything. My office is 8' x 10', and I keep my door closed most days. Other than the white noise element, it is really hard for me to tell if this is doing anything more than serving as an expensive and poorly performing fan. I wouldn't recommend using this in any space larger than 8'x10', and ideally, not even for something this "big". If you work in an actual closet then this could be the purifier for you! Maybe? 3 stars honestly because I can't tell if it's even making a difference, and feel bad giving it 1 star if I'm just not sensitive enough to notice the benefits of an air purifier. I left it running on high over the weekend and my office smelled different, but not really "better", more just weird. It is definitely NOT quiet though. On medium, it is too much for me to have a phone call in the same room. High might as well be a jet engine if you are trying to hear or have a conversation. If you want to think and block out your annoying work neighbor though, then this is GREAT! Some positives: Quality seems good. It has a sturdy metal case, and the knob seems like it will last for years to come. Uses a standard filter size so replacements should be easy to acquire. UPDATE: After using this for going on two years, and a full replacement filter life cycle, I can confirm that it IS actually doing something, haha. It does a good job of filtering out airborne dust and particulates in my small office. It also does a great job of removing odors for the first few months of the filter's use. I generally run it all day on low or medium to keep some air moving and to provide a good white-noise background. Medium is still a little much for a phone call without a noise-canceling headset. Having the office door open, or frequent trips in and out of the office do overwhelm it quickly though. I couldn't see this being of any real use in a room that couldn't be closed off or one that is any larger than 150 sqft. There is also no way to tell if the UV bulb needs to be replaced. It would be nice to include some sort of status light that would let you know its still working properly. Removing the filter and wedging the safety switches allowed me to see that it was still working but that is less than ideal. Replacement filters were easy to find on Amazon, GermGardian "E" type, and installed without any trouble. I would note that air does not blow uniformly out of the front of the filter. It tends to blow most strongly between 30 and 80 degrees to the left of the centerline when looking at the front of the unit. With almost no flow coming out to the right of the centerline. This happens to work well for the counterclockwise airflow in my office but should be considered based on your intended location.

game changer for allergies!
Just, wow! I had previously purchased a Germ Guardian pluggable air purifier for my bathroom. Honestly, I left a review on that one about a year ago. I had no complaints except I couldn't tell if it was actually working... This product though from Germ Guardian is another level! It's very simple to operate with just one button (the ionizer) and a click-wheel to get through the different fan settings (fan speed). You can immediately SMELL this thing is working, and it's working big time! I have never encountered such a well made air purifier before. There is some white noise with this machine, but it blocks out other sounds when I use it to sleep so I don't mind. It saves me sinus and headache and allergy medications and issues! The air smells fresh, crisp, and CLEAN! Again, honestly wasn't sure if this item was going to deliver in terms of performance; however, it far exceeds my expectations! Note: the air does blow out at an angle - probably 45 degrees - it does not blow out straight. I'm not sure of the reasoning behind this, but just a minor inconvenience. Overall, extremely well made product that has helped my health tremendously! I will be a future customer for life! THANK YOU GERM GUARDIAN!

Small but mighty
Works great. Durable. Have had it since 2020, and still going strong after daily use. A bit loud for its size, but in a ambient noise way it helps drown out more distracting sounds. Filters are easy to replace. It's ideal for small spaces.

Very pleased with my replacement unit.
This product looks aesthetically pleasing and well made, but upon opening the box this is not the case. I bought a GermGuardian AC4825 in 2014 and I love it. Its literally been running for 2 years. Its not noisy, doesn't vibrate, and just feels like a good quality item. I have no complaints about it. It seems like GermGuardian has really let quality slip since then. The AC4100 feels cheap right out of the box. The plastic case is thin, doesn't line up right in some areas. The filter guard clip feels like its going to snap off every time I clean it and does not fit snugly against the filter or case. My biggest complaint is the noise. The motor or fan is very unbalanced and vibrates. I have to keep it on low or I can hear an annoying vibration two rooms away. I had intended to put this on my desk but even on low the whole desk rattles. If I put it on the wood floor with the fan set on high, its felt throughout my whole apartment. For the last two months its been on a thick foam mat that I cut to size, this helps dampen the vibration a bit but I still hear it on low. Having used it for 2 months I must say it does filter the air well and do its intended job. But for the price and quality that I had expected this product was a big let down. Edit: TL;RD: I should have had my air purifier replaced months ago, I obviously received a bad unit. I did contact customer support as suggested and linked them this review. They responded the business next day and asked for a receipt and the MFG code on the unit. Much to my surprise customer support replied asking for my address and said they would send me a replacement unit, an hour later I got a replacement order confirmation. I didn't have to go though the hassle of returning my old unit, they just sent a new one. I have to say I am quite pleased with the customer support, they responded quickly and were very nice even when I expressed my disconcerting attitude towards the product. I am very happy with the new unit they sent. The case lines up, the filter guard fits snug as it should. More importantly this unit has no vibration! I couldn't believe the difference, it is so quiet compared to the old unit. On low I can't even tell its on when next to me watching tv. The new unit they sent is a huge difference compared to my original one as far as noise and general quality. It's obvious my original was defective, I should have contacted GermGuardian customer support months ago. That said I would buy this product again, GermGuardian customer support has done well by me. Assuming that this is the product I should have received in the first place I changed my rating from 1 star to 5 stars.

great air cleaner
bought this as a placeholder until i can afford another dyson pure. we bought a dyson pure and after a few days noticed how AMAZING the air in our house smelled. its lite and clean, way better than without it. so we decided to get a few more filter fans for the other rooms. this germ guardian was recommended by a friend that got a 2 pack at costco. they have allergies and swear by this. it's only been a week but this filter fan is already making a wave of good in my bedroom. i'm going to buy two more. one for the home office and one for my desk at work. we have a cockatiel with a sneezing problem and after putting the dyson and germ guardian in the house the bird sneezes less already. super excited to add a second germ guardian to the house and see how great it feels walking into a clean home. the only negative of this project is, now i am going down this rabbit hole of trying to get all the dust out of my house. from register vent filters to high MERV rated duct filters. it's a big chore. this is not caused by the germ guardian. the dyson pure has a rating system for your house air quality and once our house got to GOOD rating, the AC turned on and it was instantly VERY POOR rating. now anytime the AC turns on the sensor reports VERY POOR. we rent and our landlord is a prick so there's little we can do to the house itself. but getting the germ guardian in the bedroom, register vent filters, and the dyson in the living room next to the primary air vent helps SO MUCH. we are still in FAIR to GOOD but its rising every hour of the day and over time i am sure we will get a lot of the dust out of the house. if you are in serious need of clean air, this will be OK but i do suggest a dedicated unit with a sensor like the dyson pure at least in one room of your house. we will over time swap all these germ guardians out with dyson pure units but we are far from rich so that will be a task to complete over time. these units are very nice, yes the air blows out of only one part at a seemingly 45^ angle and that's a little weird. yes it's a little noisy on all levels, and yes there is a slight rattle that goes away with a firm tap to the unit but all in all i dont mind. hasn't kept me awake and the good is far better than the bad. TL:DR: i suggest this unit. works well.

Extremely solid product.
After owning this purifier for one day, its effect is very noticeable. Live in a 2BD/2BA apartment. The second bedroom is where we keep the cat's litter box. This purifier has reduced the smell of cat litter to the level that it goes unnoticed by me. We use lightweight litter and that seems to be dustier that your run-of-the-mill litter and that dust gets everywhere in that room. Also, I have not used the UV-C feature up to this point. I've still only owned this for one day, but was so happy with its immediate results that I thought I'd review. Any changes will be noted. As they say: "No news is good news." Be aware, some may say that it runs a little loud. Personally, if I were to move it into my bedroom and had it on the lowest setting, it wouldn't be too loud for me but I can see how it may be for others. If noise is an issue for you, find a different purifier. UPDATE #1: 12Jan2015 I have used the UV-C function and notice very little difference in its current environment. I run this purifier 24/7. Stand by my 5-stars so far. UPDATE #2: 31May2015 I've knocked the dust out of the filter a couple times since my last update and have kept it running nonstop since I initially review the product. Still awesome. UPDATE #3: 05July2015 I knocked out the HEPA filter yesterday and it was pretty packed with dust and the like. I take this as a good sign that it is still operating well. The recommended time to replace the filter is near upon me so I ordered another one that should be here tomorrow but I won't replace it yet because I don't think that it is necessary after the clean out. I decided to get one so I would have it on hand when I do decide to replace. Still 5 stars. No more updates will follow unless it explodes. UPDATE #4: 16March2016 So I lied; an update and yet the purifier did NOT explode yet. I changed the filter at about the one year mark after several cleanings to the initial filter. Some months ago I dramatically decreased the time that the purifier is running in a given day because it just doesn't seem necessary any longer. Recently (and I mean within the past few days) the purifier's three different fan levels have sort of leveled out. I mean to say that the LOW setting is an awful lot like the MEDIUM setting and not much different from HIGH either. I've had this happen to my automobile fan in the past. In this case, I think that some resistor(s) stopped working (well, anyways) so the fan is receiving near the same electrical current no matter the setting. The UV bulb has gone out but that might be normal for the amount of use it has seen. Strongly recommend this company. When this baby goes out, I'll be going with GermGuardian again. Update #5: 27Sep2016 No significant change. I don't run it nearly as often as I did previously (cat litter box went into a closet of its own to limit dust). The fan operates on one speed regardless of the speed selected. I'm toying with the idea of getting a higher-end model soon. We'll see.

Oh my god! I wouldn't believe it possible...
Nobody could a) Pay me to write this review or b) Convince me beforehand that a HEPA filter would work so dramatically to reduce household indoor allergen responses which made my life a living hell in several rooms of a cat-filled house! Now getting rid of the cats isn't an option. Had it been 1/2 the problem might have been solved. This makes it possible to enjoy cats and breathe easy - no pun intended! Like others who have reviewed this I suffer from various non-life-threatening allergies. Just because they don't send you to the hospital doesn't mean you don't want to end the suffering, lol. I decided this filter was the best way to go about that. I could not imagine allergies caused such discomfort. I didn't realize the cause of the sneezing and watery eyes and constant mucus production and runny nose -- that's what allergies feel like/look like in case you didn't know! I resisted the notion I was allergic too! Well this filter proved me wrong and happily so! It had to have been the cats (which I knew about) and probably as well some mildew or mold from an A/C unit or carpet in the vicinity perhaps as well. That's a lesson and sometimes a small electronic box is the teacher. Simple but important lesson: Your lungs are your life! This unit cleans the air!!!! I haven't sneezed in MONTHS on account of the effectiveness of this unit. Here's how I could tell it made the difference: Before: I sneezed, blotted faucet-face, wiped/closed/narrowed-to-slits eyes, had relatively more inexplicable mild itch sensations (not much, but more than now!) ... a dozen, sometimes more a day! Being at this house more or less was to be in a veritable atmospheric torture chamber(!) Now: I don't sneeze at all here. I confess it happened once since I got it. I don't think I'm exaggerating. It's been 3 months now. I have yet to change the filter. I don't drip. I don't leak. I don't emit gunk from my head. What is this, even? It's the pleasure of having good air, my friends. You breathe constantly and this filter is your electronic bestie. I used to think my other consumer electronics were (phone/computer.) No. You breathe constantly. You can put down the phone. Putting down your life isn't so easy, so you might want to take the point away that if you are discomforted by air impurities, the rest doesn't matter that much and this needs to be addressed first. In retrospect I wish I had gotten one 10 or more years ago; had I only understood the causality of my moderate-but-constant sufferings at various places. This unit didn't save my life, it just made it more worth living! It's an investment in one's self. Wonderful product. Very effective. Strong air throughput; UV light is an outstanding secondary deactivator/filter. This kills discomfort so people can live! I would give it 8 or 10 stars!

Great air filter but has a melted plastic smell that never goes away.
We have had this Air Purifier for 1 year now (almost to the day). It's does make noise but I like the white noise to drown out neighbors so that wasn't an issue for me. It does clean the air because the filters get pretty dirty and we clean the prefilter (carbon one) often. The inner paper filter lasts a long time as long as you keep the prefilter clean. The issue is that it was giving off a melted plastic smell when we first got it. Over time, that smell has increased rather than decreased. My husband can just smell it but I am more sensitive to smells and it's really strong for me when I get without 18" of it. Then, last night, it started to make a weird high pitch whirring sound (like the fan motor was not engaged - no other way to describe it. Husband took it apart and didn't see anything wrong. He put some motor grease on the fan motor and the sound slowly decreased within about 10 mins and now it's normal again. We run it 24/7 and it only turns off when we clean the prefilter once every 2-3 weeks. So this was disappointing. Not sure how much longer it will last now. 1 star loss for the smell and 1 star loss for the fan issue after just 1 yr. It seems to have gone up in price since we got ours and I would never pay the new price for another one of these. When this one dies, it's going to the dump. It does a great job of cleaning the air but at what cost when it puts out such a strong odor even after a year.
