Insightful
A very interesting book detailing the behind the scenes demands on a medical team in the NFL. A lot of informative information on issues these teams deal with on a regular basis, and the conditions and pressure they have to keep players healthy and on the field sometimes to the detriment of platers and teams. Throw the persona of Al Davis and the Raiders and you have a great read. The book made me appreciate more the conditions these players play within. On TV it looks like they are all pretty good to go, but hidden under that image is a lot of pain, serious health threats and in some cases paralysis.A very telling book. Well written. And yes it also deals with the steroid use and the detriment and havoc it plays with the players body. This was a good read.

one of the best football books
that I've ever read. I can't think of a single, negative thing about this book.It is of course written from a team physician's view, so it is mostly about the health issues that face players. He didn't pull any punches when describing them. He was very (brutally) candid about that.He also gave a good view of the reality of working under Al Davis, since A.D. was involved in all aspects of his team. Davis seemed extremely generous in some ways and then sadistic in others. One thing I came away with from this book, was some knowledge of the reality of steroids in general and their use in the NFL in particular. If you buy/read this book, you should end up with a good overview of what those steroids are all about. Many people, such as myself, were curious about all the muscular giants/players who were showing up in the NFL by the second half of the 80's. A lot of them, in retrospect, were not "legit" so to speak. They were artificially enhanced. They couldn't do that much, if any, better than the rest of us who played high school and college ball, using only weight lifting to gain size. It's gotten to the point were one cannot really relate to these behemoths that play these days.On the other hand, the league's ban on steroids has not resulted in any decrease in size of players. They are still showing up, attracted by the large salaries offered in the NFL today. If you're big/strong/fast, you would do well to consider a career in pro football. But, it's a great book and highly recommended.

easy to understand style that should keep the reader engaged
Shout out to all the Sports in American Society students looking to read this book!I was assigned this book for a class of mine, and made it through the entire book in one night. Dr. Huizenga writes in a descriptive, easy to understand style that should keep the reader engaged. If you're into football, I think you'll like this. I'm a yoga teacher, and there were parts of this book that I almost skipped because I had no clue what was happening. Even still, I was drawn in by the drama of the medical care being given to the athletes.I can't believe this wasn't talked about more, and am glad Dr. Huizenga was brave enough to tell his story. Don't go looking for deep, intellectual content in this book. Look for a raw story of what happened behind the scenes of an NFL football team, and that's exactly what you'll get.

Great easy read
This was a fascinating book, especially if you followed the Raiders in the 1980s and early 1990s when they were in LA. The author, the doctor of the Raiders, puts Al Davis and the Rosenthal, the orthopedist, in a bad light. But, although I am a Raider fan, it is hard to put Al Davis in a warm, fuzzy character. There are some sobering moments, but the humor of the pranks and characters on the Raiders made it very enjoyable and a very quick read. The only tough chapter were the last two as the author gets on his soap box about steroids and drugs. We know how bad they are, so he should have saved me 20 minutes of my life.Overall, a great book. I would recommend it to anyone who followed the Raiders and the NFL during that time. it is an easy read and goes by quickly. I was sort of saddened that the book was over.

great book even for non raider fans!
a very good book, it gives details of a doctors history with the raiders, its well written and give you a real feel on what goes on in the medical side of the game , and just what lengths some players will go through to keep playing,There is a real insight to some of the more colorful charachters on the team in particular Lyle Alzado,i would certanly recommend this book, even for non fans of the raiders , easily in my top 3 nfl books of all time

An oldie but great!
It's an oldie and I only picked it up after seeing a link, but for any NFL fan who grew up watching the game in the 80s like I did from afar in the UK it's an education. There's plenty of 'he did whaaat?' stories and humour, and Rob Huizenga presents it in a cogent intelligently narrated manner. Insights on Al Davis and the culture in the NFL of the time were truly interesting. Glad I clicked and bought, enjoyed it a lot.
