Outdoor Survival Guide

Excellent for search and rescue, hunting, scouting and family camping!
I wish I'd had this book years ago. There a lot of survival books available, but this one really covers the bases. It offers a great balance of state of the art information and instruction, while also presenting valuable and fun primitive survival skills. It strongly encourages planning ahead and becoming familiar with vital survival principles and tying those concepts into understanding the need for practical survival kit components. I felt that it really "connected the dots" for me. It helped vague ideas become clearer and it has empowered me with knowledge and a plan. The easy to follow illustrations and the extensive color photographs were a big help, too.I highly recommend it for expedition prep, search and rescue, hunting, scouting, serious backpacking and family camping. This is clearly the very best presentation of relevant outdoor survival information I have found. Keep a copy in your car, with your camping supplies and with your family emergency preparedness items. A down to earth suggestion would be to keep one in the bathroom to be available to browse through often so that you can study and learn this information little by little at your convenience. My family has already gained so much from having OUTDOOR SURVIVAL GUIDE just since last spring. It's absolutely a responsible "must have" resource for anyone who ventures into the outdoors.Great book!

recommend for those who visit remote areas
Quite interesting with a lot of good ideas. I took wilderness first aid. This book covers injuries better than the class. For instance, the author discusses how to reduce a fracture.

Perfect for Emergency Preparedness kits!
This book is a must for emergency preparedness kits. Not only does it address the physical skills that will save you in a survival situation, but also speaks to the psychological survival skills which will determine if you will hold on long enough to use them. It is written in a voice that accompanies you as if you have your own seasoned, survival guide talking to you. It is very simple, unintimidating, and basic. It is an excellent reference for identifying plants, knowing what to do with available food, building shelters, following maps, using a compass, how to deal with a wild animal, how to deal with injury, etc. The illustrations are an excellent addition in teaching the steps for each skill. This is a must-have resource not only for adventurous outdoor types, but for anyone that lives in an area where a natural disaster could occur---floods, hurricanes, storms, earthquakes, etc. I'm giving one to everyone in my extended family for Christmas.

Excelet Resource
I have looked at other survival guides and this one was laid out the best and is really easy to follow. Their are plenty of illustrations and each section is small. This makes the book an excellent resource for a survival situation since you don't need to "read a novel" in order to figure out how to put together a quick shelter or start a fire. The book is small and lite and would be easy to include in your hiking or camping gear. The main reason I bought this book is for the full color illustrations of edible plants. If you have read the "The Essential Wild Food Survival Guide" by Linda Runyon, she recommends that you compare any wild plant with at least three well illustrated books for 100% identification and this book has the best I have seen so far.

A book to read about how to survive; NOT a reference to be used in a pinch.
This is one of three books I purchased on outdoor survival skills in order to help teach some young Scouts how to "Be Prepared" for extended campouts and hikes. The book was an easy-enough read, but there is a ton of verbiage and almost no pictures beyond the section covering edible plants. On a positive note, the book's discussions on ascertaining the capabilities and vulnerabilities of fellow travelers, the benefits of keeping everyone productively busy, and the life-or-death necessity of remaining positive during a crisis were all well done. But if, God forbid, I ever find myself in a survival situation needing a refresher on how to specifically perform a task that may sustain a life or increase chances of resuce, this is NOT the book I would want to have in my backpack or glove compartment.

An Excellent Resource!
Randy Gerke's Outdoor Survival Guide blends easy to read, well organized text on what to do in a survival situation with straightforward instructions. He takes you from the probable psychological state you may find yourself, to building a shelter and foraging for food, through to stumbling upon a dangerous animal and everything in between. Not only should every outdoor enthusiast, scout, and nature loving family read and own this book, but everyone from the occasional hiker to those who drive a car. Outdoor Survival Guide should be slipped into every backpack and stowed in every glovebox. If read before any outdoor adventure, Gerke's clear-cut, candid advice on precautions and preparations could prove to be the key ingredients to surviving a life-threatening situation.
