Yes, this lens is for Nikon full-frame cameras such as the D800 and D700 series. On APS-C cameras such as D300, it still works but the field of view would be cropped.

looking at an 85mm lens, is this one really worth the 1200 difference vs the f/1.8g lens?

Yes, if you want the best professional quality images for portraits, the 85mm 1.4 is the right lens to use. Unless you are a professional, however, the 1.8 is probably the best value for money and gives excellent image quality also.

Does this lense work on a D40 DSLR camera??

Yes it can, however, if the D40 is not an FX sensor the 85mm FX lens will be more like 110mm. If you want an FX lens for your DX camera you could also consider the FX 58 which will be closer to true 85 mm when used on the DX sensor.

Being on a budget but wanting a FX camera with this lens, which FX camera would be good?

Your choice of this lens is right on. I have this lens and love it. I have a D800, but have also used this lens on a D90 which is a DX but still a terrific camera. The other responses here are very good. All the current and recent Nikon FX cameras are very good. I would let my budget be my guide, but my normal practice is to stretch for the best I can possibly afford.
