If I program a waypoint, does it show a "path" and then clearly indicate where I am relative to the desired path?

Yes -- think of it as setting a MOB (man overboard). Once you start tracking the MOB, a path is outlined as to where you are relative to the original mark, plus the bearing back (or reciprical) and distance back to the mark. The same is for using a waypoint. Once the waypoint is set, you can go to it using FIND button, click on the waypoint, hit GO and you get the same path shown plus the reciprical bearing and distance.

Does the basemap that comes with it show the marine topography?

No, this device is meant for land activities not marine although it display your location, distance, etc.

will the 78s do loran to gps conversions

No. I don't know of any conversion programs
