Phottix Mitros+ TTL Transceiver Flash for Nikon (PH80372)

This is a really good product. I bought it to be able to control my Canon flashes via Odin receivers, or to have it off camera being controlled by my Odin transmitter and not bother with receivers, etc.This flash works wonderfully. I haven't had any glitches so far. However, it is a bit under-powered compared to my Canon 580EX II speedlites. It's close to one stop less powerful. Two thirds of a stop to be exact.But the biggest drawback is that it heats up real fast -- just after about 5 consecutive flashes*, and the heat protection kicks in to extend the recycle time (BTW, with fresh batteries). In the same situation my Canon flashes will go as many as 15 times before the slow recycle kicks in.The funny thing is that sometimes with the red light off (meaning the flash is not ready to fire), I can still fire it and it produces a normal ETTL illumination as if the light was on and the flash was ready to fire.All that said,I'm still not 100% sure about my conclusions. More tests are needed. I will get back with more info at some point.* I never use straight flash. always bouncing off ceilings, walls, etcThe cam I'm using with this flash is Canon 5D Mark IIEdit: A little correction. The flash does not really heat up more than Canon flashes. It's just that the heat protection kicks in too soon. This could probably be addressed in a future firmware update.Update: the recent firmware update fixed the slow recycling problem. Now it's the best flash I've ever had. I did try Canon 600RX and they termed out to be overheating a lot.

This is my favorite speedlight, hands down, and I've owned quite a few: Nikon SB-600, several SB-700s, and a Yongnuo. Even if you're just using the Mitros+ as an on-camera flash, it works extremely well. It's more powerful than my SB-700s, and the light pattern is SO much smoother and more even than any of the others. Of course, if you're looking at one of these, you're going to want to use it as an off-camera slave, or as an on-camera master controller for other Phottix receivers. It excels here, too. Once I figured out the controls -- they're not entirely intuitive -- it has worked perfectly and has never let me down.I noticed that the price has recently dropped, making me wonder if Phottix is getting ready to come out with an updated Mitros to work with the newer Odin II system. That would be an improvement, as this Mitros only controls three groups of flashes, whereas the newer Odin II transmitter will control up to five.

I bought this flash for building a reliable wireless off camera flash system. Phottix has supported many big names in wedding photography industry so I think it should work. However it is not usable at all.I upgraded it to newest firmware and tested it both on camera and optical off camera, with my D810 and SU800 (My odin system has not arrived yet). When doing on camera TTL, it misfires a lot. The best mode is center-weighted metering, almost no misfire. For spot and matrix metering, it only fires correctly 1 out of 4 frames. When I tried highlight-weighted metering (only available on D810 and D750), it was lost at all. You can see the flash is firing but not synced with shutters at all. I can even noticed it fires between two continuous shots. That is ridiculous. For a $400 flash, how can it not work for the simplest task? Although my main purpose is to use them remotely, I still need it on camera as commander unit and do some fill flash. This kind of bad performance broke the deal immediately. Return and refund!Before I pack it for return I also tested it remotely. The optical remote sensor is right in front of SU800. Still missed a lot. Even I set it to manual mode, it has 1 off-synced shot out of 5. For remote TTL, in 7 continuous shots, it missed 4, correctly fired 2, and totally overwhelmed 1. I cannot imagine what will happen if I use it for work, it will be a nightmare.I guess this flash may work with D4/D4s/Df better, because those famous pros supported by Phottix are using them. But obviously Phottix is not paying enough attention on D810.

As a professional photographer, I'm always looking for the best deal on good lighting. I saw a lot of great reviews for this flash, so I figured, it's less than the Nikon SB700, I'll give it a whirl.......I regret my decision.I've done a lot of research to figure out why the recycle time on this light isn't great and tried everything, but it's no use. The recycle time is enough to make me leave it in my bag more often than not.I use this mainly in conjunction with the Phottix Odin II transmitter and receivers. I wish I would've returned it in the 30 day window and paid for another Nikon SB700. It works fine for shots that don't require me to be shooting quickly, such as real estate and standard business portraits, but that's a very small portion of what I do. For weddings, it'll have to be a ambiance light that I don't need to fire 100% of the time...which also means I need to still invest in another flash to compensate for what this flash lacks.

Je possède deux Mitros+ qui sont d'excellents flashes, bien asservis par le contrôleur Odin II. Aucun reproche à leur faire (version pour Nikon).

Il flash a livello tecnologico è il migliore sul mercato, in quanto è anche un trasmettitore Phottix Odin (e ricevitore).Ma dopo 1 anno ha deciso di scattare quando voleva lui... e l'assistenza è in Polonia!Quello che è successo dopo con Amazon lascia basiti!Chiamo Amazon e comunico il guasto, gli ho rispedito il prodotto indietro e mi ha restituito i soldi perchè il prodotto non era più in vendita (grande Amazon mi son detto), dopo qualche giorno mi ritrovo in vendita il Phottix Mitros+ Canon, allora decido di comprarlo, ma mi viene il dubbio che sia lo stesso mio prodotto spedito indietro, quindi chiamo Amazon gli chiedo se fosse possibile una cosa del genere e mi rassicurano dicendo che mai e poi mai Amazon fa queste cose. Allora procedo all'acquisto e mi arriva il mio vecchio flash rotto! Anche con i segni di usura. Chiedo spiegazioni al call center di Amazon e quello che mi dicono è semplicemente "scusi", ovviamente ridandomi indietro i soldi. E' assurdo che Amazon non abbia una politica di "scuse" seguite magari da un buono acquisto o sconto o altro. Sto meditando di segnalare tutto ad una associazione dei consumatori, considerando che sono un professionista e ho ricevuto un danno da questa perdita di tempo.Se ci fosse un centro assistenza in Italia Phottix sarebbe il top!

Sin lugar a dudas los mejores flashes que he tenido, nada más al peso ... te dicen que los demás están tres escalones por debajo.Muy buenos.

* Update: 21.10.2014Nachdem ich den Mitros+ gestern per Update auf den neuesten Softwarestand gebracht habe, hat sich das mit der schnelleren Erwärmung bei schnellen Blitzfolgen mit voller Leistung erledigt. Daher erhöhe ich meine Bewertung auf 4,8..... aber gerundet sehr gerne 5 Sterne!!Wenige Monate, bevor Canon seine 580er Speedlite-Serie einstellte, habe ich mir den Phottix Odin mit drei Empfängern zugelegt und bin nach wie vor von diesem Produkt sehr begeistert (keine Ausfälle und im Gegensatz zu den deutlich teureren PW mit einem Display ausgestattet, welches den Namen auch verdient). Als Canon seine Blitze dann auf die 600er Serie umstellte, fühlte ich mich als Kunde doch etwas vor den Kopf gestoßen, da nur ein Kompletttausch aller Blitze (bei mir waren das vier Stück) ein in sich funktionierendes System zur Folge gehabt hätte. Ein neuer Blitz und die drei alten Blitze hätten ohne externe Hilfe in Form eines Funksystems nicht miteinander kommuniziert. Was sollte ich dann also mit einem damals noch 700 Euro teuren Blitz mit eingebautem Funksystem, was ich nicht nutzen kann. Seitdem habe ich mich nach Alternativen umgesehen, hatte immer mal ein Auge auf den Phottix Mitros geworfen und habe dann beim Phottix Mitros+ zugeschlagen. Ein Blitz mit integriertem Sender und Empfänger, voll kompatibel zu meinem Odin, das war mir 409 Euro wert. Also bestellte ich ihn und war sehr gespannt.Schon das Auspacken war sehr interessant: Der Mitros+ steckt in einem absolut professionell designten Karton. Nachdem man den Deckel geöffnet hat, entnimmt man zunächst ein Prüfkärtchen der letzten Qualitätskontrolle, eine Schnellanleitung, dann zwei Päckchen Trockensallz sowie ein Tütchen mit Kabel (3,5 mm Klinke), Batterypack-Adapter und USB-Stick mit ausführlicher Anleitung im PDF-Format, wenn auch "nur" in Englisch und diversen anderen Sprachen, aber nicht in Deutsch (0,1 Punkt Abzug). Dann folgt die Schutztasche, die deutlich massiver als die von Canon wirkt. In deren Seitentasche steckt ein USB-Kabel, welches für ein Softwareupdate des Blitzes gedacht ist. Ebenso massiv ist der Phottixaufnäher auf der Tasche. Wenn man die Tasche geöffnet hat, dann erscheint der Blitzkopf mit bereits aufgestecktem Diffusor in einem eigenen Plastikbeutel. In einer Innentasche steckt das Ministativ, welches zwar im Gegensatz zu den Canon-Ministativen nicht nochmal extra in einer Plastikhülle verpackt war, aber dafür eine Metallhülse zum Aufschrauben auf ein Stativ beinhaltet, wo Canon lediglich mit einer Plastiklösung aufwartet.Der Blitz selber macht optisch und haptisch einen sehr wertigen Eindruck und steht da dem Canon 580EX II in Nichts nach. Ich persönlich bin zwar ein großer Freund der Drehräder bei Canonkameras und -blitzen und stehe nicht so sehr auf Vier-Sektoren-Wippen, aber sie lassen sich beim Mitros+ vorbildlich bedienen. Und hier kommt für meinen Geschmack ein weiterer Pluspunkt des Mitros+: seine Knöpfe auf der Rückseite lassen sich für meine dicken Finger viel angenehmer bedienen, als die Miniknöpfchen des 580er, auch wenn diese einen recht guten Druckpunkt haben.Neben vielen Kleinigkeiten fiel mir beim Mitros+ auch sehr positiv auf, dass er seine CFs im Display namentlich benennt (bspw. CFn 08 AF assist light anstatt wie bei Canon einfach nur CFn 08 - woher soll ich nach Wochen noch wissen, was CFn 08 ist??) Darüber hinaus ist es möglich bis zu drei Presets zu speichern. HSS und Auslösen auf den 2. Verschlussvorhang sind genauso selbstverständlich, wie ein anschließbares Batterypack. Sämtliche Features möchte ich hier nicht aufzählen, da finden sich im Internet viel bessere Stellen [...], aber damit ist der Mitros wirklich großzügigst ausgestattet.Der Blitzfußverschluss gleicht dem von Canon fast wie ein Ei dem Anderen, d.h. der Mitros+ hat auch einen mit Gummilippe gegen Wassereintritt versehenen Schnellverschluss, der sich genauso, wie der von Canon bedienen lässt. Zu sämtlichen Features, die der Canon bietet, bietet der Mitros+ eben noch den eingebauten Transceiver/Receiver (so wie der Canon 600 RT) und ist zu diversen Phottix Transceivern/Receivern kompatibel und somit sehr universal einsetzbar.Das Design ist Geschmackssache, mir persönlich gefällt das Canondesign eine Spur besser, aber das Design macht eben kein Licht. Und hier komme ich zum zweiten Punkteabzug. Der Phottix Mitros+ leuchtet bei voller Leistung etwa 2/3 Blenden schwächer, als der Canon 580EX II (mit externem Belichtungsmesser gemessen). Wenn man das weiß, kann man es bei Shootings aber ganz gut berücksichtigen und entsprechend ausgleichen. Trotzdem, 0,1 Punkt Abzug dafür.* siehe oben - Update vom 21.10.2014Nach einigen Tests fiel mir auf, dass der Mitros+ bei Einsatz unter Volllast deutlich schneller warm wird, als der Canon. Ein eingebauter Selbstschutz bewahrt ihn zwar vor einer Überhitzung, trotzdem scheint Canon das etwas besser gelöst zu haben, weshalb ich nochmal 0,2 Punkte abziehe. Unter Teillast (ab ca. 1/4 der vollen Leistung), gleichen sich die Blitze in der Hitzeentwicklung wieder an.Alles in Allem ist der Phottix Mitros+ meiner Meinung nach ein absolut gelungener Blitz, der in Sachen Features den Canon 580EX II ganz klar schlägt und von dem ich mir, trotz kleinerer Schwächen, mit Sicherheit noch einen Weiteren zulegen werde. Die Qualität, der Leistungs-/Lieferumfang und sein Preis sind einfach überzeugend.
