Q: Is brass better for use in jags? Thanks

Purchased these on Amazon quite some time ago because I couldn’t find an aluminum set. Unless your cleaning your barrel specifically for copper, the solid copper jags are better because they are a softer material than the inside of your barrel. These are brass underneath but the coating hardness is a concern for barrel damage as are the strong ammonia based copper cleaners. After cleaning for carbon fouling, I switch to aluminum jags for the copper fouling. These are my back-ups should I ever loose my aluminum set. I’m breaking in a new barrel now so after 3min max I run dry patches down the bore followed by a patch with Kroil on it RO neutralize any remaining ammonia. When the amount of blue/green streaking on the patches suddenly decreases, I’m done with the barrel break in process (Over simplified). You should not need these unless your breaking in a new barrel. For that copper on the patches is an indicator of your break in progress. Once that’s done who cares if copper jags give you a false positive, unless your a bench rest shooter. Get a good bore guide if your without one.

Q: Question that needs answering- with any jags, do you unscrew jag at the end of barrel and pull up your bore rod? or remove patch & pull jag back up?

For auto rifles, I use a muzzle bore guide and place the weapon upside down. The patch drops (usually) out of the open action. Then, remove the rod and use a new patch if necessary. For slotted patch guides, I pull the patch through from the chamber.For bolt rifles, I remove the bolt and insert a bore guide. Patch is removed from the muzzle end. No need to unscrew the jag. For slotted patch guides, I push the patch through from the chamber using the bore guide. Sometimes pull if I have a muzzle guide. (Muzzle guides can be made from fired shotgun hulls; drill out the primer hole to fit the rod.)
