handy obsorbent silica gel stuff
WHAT! No cobalt chloride?! That just chaps my hide! I occasionally put cobalt sprinkles on my ice cream. What will I do now? Anyhow, this is a good product, these things do what they are supposed to, absorb moisture and it does it rather well. Fit anywhere including your pockets. Wonder if it would work as underarm deodorant? Anyhow, need something that keeps your sensitive items dry and can be reused by heating in the oven, then this is for you! Its reasonably priced and its fun to shake. Please don't overthink these things, its a simple device that does one thing, absorb moisture and help protect you electronics or other items. Ok, it does 2 things, but you know what I mean. :) Feed it!

Dry capsules = Easier capping
Background/Use: I like to cap my own supplements using empty gelcaps and bulk powders. To accomplish this, I use a capping machine and buy gelatin capsules 1,000 at a time. I had trouble getting the previous caps to fit into the machine so I figured they must be absorbing moisture. So when I bought my present package of empty capsules, I also purchased this dessicant box to keep them dry. The relative humidity in my house stays between 40-50% (40-pint dehumidifier in the summer and many humidifiers in the winter) so I'm not fighting some crazy conditions to begin with. When I got the gelcaps in, I tried them in the capping machine and though some of them were a tight fit, they worked as received. After that, I transferred them to a gallon ZipLoc bag and put this dessicant box in. 5 days later, I tried them again and to my surprise, the capsules had actually LOST MOISTURE. I was just hoping to prevent them gaining any additional moisture but to lose moisture was astounding. They all fit right into the capping machine with no resistance and in fact the top half fit so loosely that a couple of them wouldn't stay in when I flipped it upside down to press onto the filled bottom half. I did not have high hopes for this so I was looking for a solution involving calcium sulphate (the ultimate dessicant) but now I doubt I will need anything stronger than this. Bottom line: For keeping capsules dry, this works splendidly well.

The little gel packs weren't doing a great job. So far
I really needed something to put in my safes to absorb the moisture. The little gel packs weren't doing a great job. So far, they work ok, but I'll have to return a few months down the line to see how they are after I recharge them and check on my items in the safe to see if they are dry or not. Stay tuned.

Orange to white....Easy, Simple, Affective
I purchased these are reading and finding out that the ones with the blue crystals have a product in them that causes cancer and since you need to put these in your oven at 300 degrees for 3 hours to dry that is not a good thing to have. So I decided to switch to these ones that dont have that chemical in them and they work great. you put them in wherever moisture is present and the crystals soak up the moisture. After the crystals have soaked up the moisture they will slowly turn to a white color letting you know it is time to dry it out again. There is no expiration date because these things last forever. Great product.

Great for firearm storage.
Great for firearm & fishing reel storage. I've been using them for years. Just refresh them in the oven and they're good for another year.

Effective and Economical Solution
I ordered 2 of these for use in a 40" gun safe. They have done a great job in eliminating any moisture and the fact that they can be "recharged" by heating them in the oven for 3 hours at 300*F makes them a great value. These dessicants let you know when they need to be "recharged" by showing a clear color through the small window on them. I purchased these in October 2016 and am writing this review August 2018 and these are still going strong. Some other reviews have noted that the window is hard to see through after heating them in the oven one time, but I haven't experienced that with the ones that I have FWIW.

It looks like it's working but it's counterproductive
Terrible smell when recharging in oven, who knows whether the chemicals we're inhaling are healthy. But my real problem with these is they're moisture magnets. I bought 2 of these and a few of the plugin mini dehumidifiers for my safes and my camera bag. I dutifully recharged them when they got wet inside. And then I found out that even if you put these in a completely dry safe they will get wet because no safe is sealed and these draw the moisture in from the outside. They don't just absorb the naturally existing moisture-they draw it in. Proof positive is that If you put a goldenrod or one of the Moisture King products in your safe and you put one of these portable desiccant types in as well, the heated rod will not be able to do its job because it can't heat the air up enough to keep up with the moisture the desiccant draws in from the outside. Remove the desiccant and the heated rod will reduce the moisture significantly because heated air holds moisture much better than cold air. So if you have absolutely no other option, get this type. But if at all possible, get the heating kind. Just by the way, moisture king now makes a flat flexible dehumidifier that can be laid flat or rolled up, great for anywhere where you don't want a tube taking up space. The plug is even removable so you can feed the cord through a small hole and then reattach the plug. I'm in no way affiliated, just love it when people come up with great ideas.
