able to use the fan in the northeast both in summer and winter
My initial review. I had intended to use it in the winter in my large bedroom with a vaulted ceiling by placing it on top of my armoire and aiming it across to the opposite corner of the room. This fan has 5 buttons on the top of the unit, one on/off then 1 - 4 for speed settings. Speeds 1 and 2 are very quiet, 3 is noticeable but not loud and 4 is pretty loud. Alas, with the buttons on the top of the unit, on the armoire I can't reach them without a ladder. I decided to relocate the 660 downstairs to my family room and get a smaller model, the 630 with a three speed switch on the side of the unit to use in my bedroom. Note, while it is working very well for me in the summer circulating the air conditioned air downstairs, my hope is to run the 660 upstairs on the lowest speed this winter to circulate some of the hot air from upstairs to the lower level. As others have noted, during the summer, I was able to raise my thermostat 3 degrees using the fan downstairs thereby saving on the AC electric bill. Will update my review later in the year when we switch from AC to heating. 12/19/2014 update. For the winter I have relocated the fan from downstairs to the 2nd floor stairwell landing. I aim it at the far corner ceiling of the stairwell and set it on low. The lowest setting continues to be very quiet to the point that I have to remember to turn it off at night when the thermostat reverts to the night temperature setting. Since my first floor is on a slab and much colder in the winter then the 2nd floor, the fan helps circulate some of the warmer air upstairs to the lower level. I continue to be satisfied with my purchase. I have found that it takes trial and error to position the fan in order to maximize its efficiency. In my case, I locate it upstairs in the winter and downstairs in the summer. I continue to rate it 5 stars. 7/21/2025 update. Yes, 2025 update of my initial review written over 10 years ago. I have purchased many of the Vornado 660 models which, in my opinion, are the best fans. I continue to use them in the winter and the summer. In the summer, I aim the fan diagonally to the opposite corner of the ceiling and truthfully, the air simply drops down on me like a cool blanket. I have purchased many of this model, given one to several dear friends as gifts. In the winter months, I find that they circulate the warm air at the ceiling around the room. I usually run them on the lowest speed where I need to remember to shut it off before leaving the room because it is so quite at that speed, its easy to forget that its on. One last note, my original review talks about the buttons on top of the fan make them difficult to reach when the fan is on top of my armoire but I now plug it into a switch that I can easily reach and there you have it. I'd give it 10 stars if I could and at todays sale price $88, its a bargain. They help me keep these high electric bills a bit lower.

I replaced my ceiling fan for this, and I love it! (UPDATE) 07/30/2029
In my room ( the man cave) I have a custom build PC, PS3, XBOX 360, and a 40" Samsung TV. Now as you can imagine, all these things turning on together and staying on tend to build up quite a bit of heat, enough to make me sweat. I dealt with this for a while cause my brother wouldn't be playing the consoles a lot back then, but now he plays for literally the same amount of time I'm on the PC...4 hours or so. One day I said enough is enough! I didn't like sweating in my own room after a long day, so I decided to buy a fan. I went through a few pages before getting to the Vornado. What actually drew me here was the price, it was much higher then all the other fans I had looked at. So the question came to mind....is it really that good? Unfortunately, fan reviews are not easy to come by, which is understandable. So I just did some research on what made a Vornado so special from other fans. This fan actually circulates the air in your room and it feels like a light breeze all over your room. It brought down the temperature in my room by about 3 degrees, but on top of that it's a constant breeze that cools you off, so it feels even better then what the thermal reads. Because of the way this circulates air, I actually had to not use my ceiling fan so it would not disrupt the circulation process. This fan blows out a TON more air then any fan I have ever had before. forewarning though, please be advised that it circulates air, that means it will not do it's job if it's pointed directly at you, it has to be pointing to some top corner of the room to move the air round properly. As far as the settings go, 1=Literally no sound at all, 2=Still pretty quite, 3=Now you might want to put a few notches up on your TV, 4= sounds like a normal fan now, it's not super loud, but enough to notice a fan is on somewhere. As a suggestion I would get this fan above all the other Vornado whole room fans. Because what this fan can do on setting 2 and 3 is the high setting for the lower priced models and I like having the choice to go up or down to what I need. Now there is another model called 733, know that the 660 ( this one) is a lot better at energy conserving and can blow more amount of air at a quieter level. UPDATE 11/1/2017: I want to just let you all know I'm still rocking this fan almost 4 years later and I still love it. Makes my room cool, if you have any questions, ask away!!! I got years of experience with this fan, and I set up my amazon to let me know when there is a question so I can be more prompt with the replies! ( sorry for the old comments out there!) UPDATE 07/30/2019: Still rocking it after 5 years and it performs just like it did day one!

Very powerful fan for the size
This fan is small but it pushes a lot of air. Low setting is whisper quiet. As quiet as my custom pc rig that I specifically designed to be quiet. On high, this thing blows a ton of air and really does circulate the air in a room, creating the sensation of a constant breeze. High setting has some noise, but that's a given, seeing as how much air is being moved through the blades. It works as advertised and I'm surprised. This is my first purchase of a whole room circulator, and it works. Update: 03/19/15 I've been using this fan for over 7 months. I can't get over how quiet this fan is. I work at lowes, and we sell vornado fans, but not this model. This is the model I would recommend most. Very sturdily built. Don't get the cheaper versions of this fan. The lighter cheaper versions may tend to rattle a bit at higher settings, but this thing is rock solid. I can sleep at night with the fan turned to low, and it's whisper quiet with just a slight hum that's akin to a very low ac noise. The hum actually helps me sleep even better, so I guess it could double as a white noise generator. I'm thinking of buying a second one, incase they ever discontinue these in the future. Update 06/19/17 Yes this update is over 2 years from the last update. I'm in San Jose, and we just hit 108 degrees. It got so insanely hot that I lost a few blueberry bushes. The house ac is on, almost every 30 minutes, it's that hot. My room in particular, gets very hot because I use a gaming rig pc as well as a surround sound receiver which is basically a small heater. I just want to say, the vornado I bought and reviewed, over 2 years ago, is still performing flawlessly. It's still quiet, believe it or not. I use this fan to help circulate the cold air from the ac vent in my room. I'm dying from this heat, but at least this fan makes it bearable for me.

Effective, Efficient, & Quiet: No Regrets
Works exactly as described! Cools down room & anyone in path of fan. Even when it canโt cool an entire room, my family gets relief by sitting in the path of the fan on its higher settings. Even on 90 degree days it puts out cool air. Itโs energy efficient & near silent on the lowest setting. Even on the highest setting you can have conversations near the fan. This is an easy recommendation for any home where AC usage is unavailable or rationed. (Extra tip) At night, when a hot day has turned into a cool night, open a window and activate the fan near (at least 1 foot away) the window. The fan pulls in cool air from outside, and helps to quickly cool off the home.

Best fan I've ever owned
I bought this fan over 11 years ago and it is STILL going strong and working like it's brand new. It's held up through multiple cross-country moves and even survived me getting it way too wet at one point when I tried to clean it without being careful enough about protecting its wiring. It is also surprisingly small and easily transportable given how powerful a punch it packs - during very hot and muggy periods I often end up moving it from my bedroom to living room to office over the course of a day with no problems. Three different speed settings make it easy to adjust depending on your needs/preferences. It can be loud on its highest setting but nothing out of the ordinary or egregious for a fan of this size and power. I've been so impressed by this that I've bought two other Vornado fans plus a Vornado air purifier over the years. I don't think there's anywhere else you can go for better fans than Vornado!

Not Sure I'd Buy Again, But Credit Where It's Due
You can see my old review of this item below, but a little over a year after purchasing this item I have to update my score from 2/5 to 4/5. I rent and my landlord doesn't care about energy efficiency or insulation so: (a) I have a crummy window AC that's installed incorrectly in my wall (and it doesn't drain properly (AND it's not rated for this size room anyway!)); (b) my windows are not insulated and so a large, old hurricane window (110" x 50") gets 12 hours of direct sunlight each day; and finally (c) my lease forbids me from doing anything about either of these problems. I live in Miami, so (needless to say) my apartment gets uncomfortably warm during the summer. But yesterday I came out into my living room, where this circulator hangs out, and it was just unbearable. I couldn't figure out why immediately, but then I noticed that this circulator was off (there was probably a power outage -- this device has a surge protector in it and needs to be reactivated after any flicker). I turned this back on amd within an hour my apartment was back to what I expected -- too warm for true comfort but cool enough to put the ambient temperature out of my mind. So whatever my initial complaints, it is clear to me now that this circulator does, indeed, help cool my apartment. I stand corrected, and happily so. [Old Review] SYNOPSIS Please don't dismiss my review by supposing that I tried to use this differently than intended. This DOES NOT work as intended. The "air tunnel" this fan creates travels less than 10 feet before the airflow feels equal to ambient. My Amazon Basics fan does a better job circulating air than this overpriced floor fan (ahem, "air circulator"). Difficulty Level - How Hard Was This To Use? This thing "moves air," so it obviously "circulates." However, the volume of air it moves is LOW relative to the PRICE POINT. You can get as much circulation for less than half the price. I cannot in good conscience recommend this unit -- perhaps mine is defective, based on how glowingly it has been reviewed by so many others.

It will push air but disclaimer. Its not a good alternative to a central A/C
I have mixed feelings on this one. So without a doubt it works. As one comment said you better believe it will move air very easily. Compared to the cheap $39.99 Lasko one at walmart. This one takes the cake and will blow way more air. Noise Levels: Its okay. To say its silent is a stretch but its not loud. Its not industrial omg whats that noise. You can totally sleep through it but it is one where you can hear the fans from the hallway so I would say its pretty standard that you would expect from any old fan. Cooling Potentials: At the end of the day most fans from what I have seen simply put won't cool a room down. You can feel the air no matter where you put it in the room and point it if its on full blast but it will simply put be no replacement to an actual centralized a/c unit. Please remember this when you have little ones. I live in Southern California so it gets hot after June glooms over. Like really hot like heat wave kind of heat. This fan provides a great breeze that keeps my internal temperatures at good levels when im resting in bed. I bought two of them and have them both on my nighstands so its actually nice from that perspective but remember that the hot air doesn't escape. Worth the price: Ehh to someone's point I think you can probably get away with finding a cheaper fan elsewhere. I personally went with these two after reading reviewers on it and the name Vornado was cool and I researched it so it met my needs. However, at $200.00 it works. It gets the job done. I don't feel like I wasted money tbh. Its a lot of air these small things can push out but again it won't get the actual hot air out the room unless there is an open window/door. etc. I do think a better alternative would be a portable A/C unit if you really need something going but for me as the only person dwelling in this room the two fans work great. TL:DR I am pleased with my purchase and it works no doubt. I would recommend it again but I would exercise a lot of caution when recommending this to someone.

Really good fans
Vornado fans are on of the best on the market. They move more air than most of the fans I have used. Their noise level is moderate and they work for many years. I have a smaller version in my basement to circulate air and moisture, it has been running continuously for 2.5 years. I often purchase ne of these fans as gifts for people. No one has ever complained.

This fan really blows... air
Bought a 660 to help circulate air in an upstairs/converted attic. Performs admirably. It will take some trial and error to find the best position and speed. PROS Pushes a heck of a lot of air. Absolutely ridiculous amounts on max. Seriously. I can't stress that enough. I put it by my backdoor, down a hallway and instantly felt the air on the other side of the house right after turning it on. 4 speeds. Barely audible on speed 1. Speed 2 a bit louder, but its mainly just airflow noise. Tilts effortlessly up to 90 degrees (pointing straight up) Doesn't take up much floor space. It's actually much smaller than my tabletop fan. Blows much more air on speed 2 than my tabletop fan does on it's max speed and is less audible. Pairs well with my air conditioner to push air to the other side of the house. Beeps when turning on or changing speeds. But it's a quiet beep. My air conditioner on the other hand is almost comically loud. CONS Power cable is a bit too short in my opinion. I think it's about 6 feet long or so. 10 or 12 feet would have been better. There are some places where I would like to put it, but can't without using an extension cord, and I really don't want to do that. Since the power buttons aren't mechanical, I don't think you can use this with a timer or smart device. Doesn't bother me at all, but felt I should mention it. GRIPES Always defaults to max speed when turning it on. I almost never use it on max. It's too loud for a bedroom, but got dayum does it feel like you're in a wind tunnel on max. Can't really fault it for that. Power buttons are on the top/back of the unit. Kind of a strange location. Not a deal breaker so it gets a gripe. I haven't had to clean it yet. Doesn't seem like too much trouble to open, but I can't really comment on that yet. All in all I am very happy with it. Will probably buy another one down the line for myself or as a gift.
