Adds Great Depth to Photographs
First off, I will say I am an armature photograph and see photography as a hobby rather than a career. For my purposes, this lens is fantastic. To start, the build quality of this lens is amazing. I upgrade to this lens from a 40mm Canon pancake lens with a max aperture of 2.8. Compared to that lens, it's weightier and larger, however I love that about this 30mm. The 40mm felt toyish to me and was constructed of plastic; this Sigma is made mainly from metal. To me, that's not a huge deal because like many of you reading this review, we take good care of our equipment, however the Art lens feels more professional and if you were to take it out on the trail, it could withstand a bump or two. Compared to other Sigma lenses I own, this is by far the best constructed; I also own the 10-20mm and the 18-250mm. The 10-20 feels well built and hefty, but 18-250 is frankly cheap feeling, however you should have no concerns about this 30mm. What I love the most about this lens is the fantastic depth of field it provides. The bokeh of the lens is smooth as silk and allows the subject of the image to be captured brilliantly. It isolates the subject and forces the viewer to examine it, rather than what might be behind it. Also, if there is light behind the subject, the bokeh of it is spherical and not at all angular. The 1.4 max aperture is a great feature and the low light performance is incredible. It makes taking photos with friends and family at gatherings much more enjoyable and less frustrating. Since the lens lets in more light, you can capture your photos with a shorter shutter speed making your images less shaky and crisper when their on screen. However, there are other lenses out there that are cheaper and also shoot at f/1.4, (even the Canon f/1.4 50mm is cheaper than this), so why look at this lens? Compared to other f/1.4 lenses on the market, the 30mm obviously lets you capture more in the frame. On a crop sensor, this is huge. Almost every crop sensor Canon makes has a multiplier of 1.6, so really this 30mm lens is the equivalent of a 48mm on a full frame camera. I love this focal length. Even with aforementioned 40mm pancake lens I had, I found myself clearing a path as I constantly had to back further away from my subjects to capture the entirety of what I wanted. At times I was roughly 12 feet away from a group of four people if I wanted to fit them all in... and that was on a 40mm... I'd be even further away from subjects on a 50mm, which really led me to this lens. What if I wanted to shoot a small subject and wanted to fill the frame? The 30mm would be disadvantageous in this scenario right? Well... not really. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of only roughly a foot. If I did want to get an isolated image of a still, I could shoot it closer with this lens, filling the frame to a distance which is close to that of what a 50mm lens would achieve with a minimum focusing distance of 1.5 feet. There have been complaints about front focusing / back focusing with this lens... I have had no problems with this. Even so, Sigma does make a USB mount for Art lenses where you can adjust them on your computer. I do understand though that when you spend close to 500 dollars on a lens, you should not have to buy another accessory to perfect it; luckily I don't have this issue, but it's nice to know that 5 years from now if I am noticing discrepancies, I could correct for it. The video quality seems fine - I rarely shoot video - however the main issue that I have is that its noisy when auto focusing. The mic does pick it up and it is off putting when viewing videos. For me, not a big issue as I mainly shoot stills. As an armature photographer, I am very happy with this purchase and upgrade from my 40mm pancake. At the end of the day, this lens takes super sharp images, is extremely versatile (more so than a 50mm), adds great DOF to images, performs fantastically in low light, and is built strongly enough to serve you well into the future. There is really not much more a hobbyist could ask for.

The PERFECT lens for high-quality video conferencing from your desk
Having converted to work from home, but wanting to elevate my game, I installed Canon's EOS Webcam Utility on my Surface Book. I set up my Canon 70D on a tripod, one leg on my desk, the other two on the floor (desk is pulled out about 8 inches from the wall). I tried using my Canon 50mm f/1.8 - a GREAT lens for $125 - but it was too zoomed in on my APS-C sensor (would be great on a full frame), I had to sit too far away from my screen. I then was using a 24-70mm f/2.8 Tamron zoom. It worked, but still didn't soften the background as much as I wanted. I bit the bullet and bought this Art prime lens, and the 30mm focal length is PERFECT for sitting at your desk, with the camera just above your screen (where a webcam would normally go) when using the APS-C sensor size. At f/1.4 the bokeh is super soft, lighting is never an issue, and the autofocus on this is substantially faster than my 24-70 (not to mention, a lot quieter than on the 50mm f/1.8). It never hunts - it's just always in focus. The soft, blended background means a little mess is usually not visible. My 120lb dog sleeps on the bed regularly, and is only noticed when he gets up to stretch. Also, being in sharp focus with a soft background makes the virtual green screen option in Zoom crisper than usual, even without a green screen. A green screen is still way better, but such a hassle. I get more compliments on my visual setup without a virtual background - it makes a difference. Clients I speak with who know nothing about photography rave and ask how to get their camera to look so good. Took the lens out this weekend to shoot some up-close action shots of the kids at a baseball game - the pictures are fantastic. Bright, sharp, focused. The lens LOOKS good on the camera, sleek and solid. It may be my new favorite lens.

Good First Impressions
By way of background; I am very much a novice when it comes to photography, but want to make it a serious hobby. Since I'm new to this type of high aperture lens, I am still trying to figure out the right f stop and ISO settings for various conditions. So please take my image quality impressions for what it's worth. I have owned my 60D for about two years and have been using the Canon 18-200 lens exclusively. This purchase is a result of an instructor's recommendation during one-day DSLR class and a LOT of internet research. My first impression of this lens is very high quality based on the materials and general look. I am very surprised how small the actual glass is considering this lens is designed to take in a lot of light. The first time i used it, I thought it didn't work because the focus ring didn't move and there was no motor noise. I later realized the focusing is silent and the ring doesn't move when focusing. This is a noticeable difference when comparing it to the Canon 18-200. So far, my close up outdoor shots look amazing (subject is about 1 to 5 feet away). You would think a professional took them! The focused subject is extremely sharp and the background is blurred perfectly - almost has a 3D look to it. All pictures were taken between 1.4 and 3.0 f stops. However, my indoor shots, especially with lower lighting are not so good. They are either out of focus or too dark. Further, when I focus on a distant object inside or outside, the picture doesn't seem very sharp So far, I am attributing these problems to user inexperience - anyone have advice here? At my daughter's birthday party today, I actually switched over to my reliable 18-200 to insure that I'd have good pictures. This also made me realize how much more real estate the 18mm gave me in tighter spaces. After downloading today's pictures to iPhoto it turns out most of the Sigma pictures came out good - looks like I'm starting to figure it out by day 10. I think this part will just take a little more time to perfect these indoor shots.

Gekauft habe ich es weil ich mit dem Nikon 35 1.8 g nie richtig warm wurde und mir die billige Verarbeitung ein Dorn im Auge war. Beim alten Sigma scheiden sich die Geister also habe ich das neue bestellt. Das erste Wow Gefühl nach dem Auspacken, das Objektiv ist aus Metall, sieht Hochwertig aus und fühlt sich Klasse an. Beim Aufsetzen an die Kamera muss man satt drehen, muss sich noch etwas einlaufen aber sitzt perfekt. Wichtig ist mir die Offenblende bei Lowlight, also an meiner D7100 Iso auf 1600 mehrere Aufnahmen bei F1.4 auf das Auge meines Sohnes und ich werde nicht enttäuscht, Fokus sitzt und Schärfe ist mehr als ok. AF ist Flott und sicher.Farbsäume treten bei Offenblende auf, was aber bei solchen Objektiven normal ist, ebenso eine leichte Vignettierung und Verzeichnung. 1-2 Blenden abgeblendet ist das alles kein Problem mehr, ansonsten ein Klick in Lightroom. Version 4 hat das Profil der Linse nicht, dafür dann Lightroom 5. Das Objektiv scheint keine Schärfenschwäche am Rand zu haben ab Blende 2,2 habe ich subjektiv knackscharfe Bilder bis zum Rand und bei Blende 5,6 ist es überragend. Alle Blenden habe ich noch nicht getestet aber das Teil ist wirklich knackscharf und absolut Offenbldentauglich. Einzige Schwäche ist Offenblende bei unendlich, hier gibt's Aussetzter. Mal sitzt die Schärfe, dann aber auch mal komplett unscharf oder Schärfepunkt liegt weiter hinten. Im Liveview aber immer scharf. Mir fehlt da die Erfahrung ob der AF bei Offenblende und weiter entfernten Motiven da einfach auch mal überfordert ist und man hier einfach manuell Fokussieren sollte. Aber auf dem Stativ mit genug Kontrast beim Motiv bekommt man auch hier scharfe Bilder aber bei unendlich sollte wieso abgeblendet werden. Manuell Fokussieren macht mit der Linse Spass, der Fokusring läuft schwer aber nicht zu schwer und flüssig. Wer nur auf Schärfe schaut kann zum Nikon greifen, wer auf das gesamte Wert legt ist hier richtig. Der Mehrpreis ist es wert. Tolle Haptik und Optik, Offenblende scharf, schönes Bokeh und wertige Verarbeitung. Geli und ein Köcher sind dabei und 3 Jahre Garantie. Und die Angst zwecks Fehlfokus ist unbegründet selbst wenn es mal passiert, ab zu Sigma und nach kurzer Zeit habt ihr ein absolut tolles Objektiv das ich nicht mehr hergebe. Nachtrag: Leider hat sich nun nach einiger Zeit doch eine erhebliche Schwäche aufgetan. Das Sigma hat scheinbar Probleme mit den seitlichen Fokusfeldern und liefert hier nur unscharfe Bilder. Dieses Problem habe ich entdeckt nachdem im Internet mehrere User von diesem Problem berichten. Ein Test an meiner D7100 hat ergeben das auch ich betroffen bin. Das gleiche Problem taucht auch an meiner D3000 auf und man findet im Internet einen Thread über das Thema. Es betrifft bei mir die ganz seitlichen Fokusfelder und die Reihe davor, abblenden bringt da gar nichts. Nur mit den Kreuzsensoren und den Sensoren die nah daneben liegen sind die Ergebnisse gut. Kamera ist es nicht, kein anderes Objektiv zeigt den Fehler und es wurde nicht nur an der D7100 festgestellt. Auch der unsichere Autofokus bei unendlich konnte eine Sigma Justage nicht beseitigen. Hier hilft nur abblenden. Schade, den alles andere, Verarbeitung, Bokeh und Offenblende sind ansonsten sehr gut, wenn man über starke Farbsäume hinweg sehen kann. Am Montag werde ich bei Sigma anrufen, bin gespannt was hier wegen dem klaren Problem mit den seitlichen Fokusfelder gemacht wird. Ansonsten geht das Objektiv zurück, zu teuer für solche Fehler. Ich rate jedem sein Objektiv auf Distanz und alle Fokusfelder zu testen, vor allem Nikonbesitzer

Muy contento con la compra. Ningun problema de enfoque en mi Nikon 7100. Sigma ha hecho una lente profesional para camaras de aficionado. Esta construido como un tanque aleman, un tanque negro, robusto, sigiloso, solido..., precioso. No te arrepentiras por la compra. Es nitido a rabiar, incluso a f 1.4. Es lo que mas me ha sorprendido. Es la mejor lente que jamas haya tenido. Es una delicia utilizarlo a f 1.4. Su Bokeh es cremoso e invita a la creacion artistica. Los problemas de enfoque, que se menciona en los foros, creo que es debido a que enfocar a 1.4 es extremadamente dificil y requiere tecnica. Por decir algo malo del objetivo: Es algo pesado. Gracias SIGMA y AMAZON.

Los que le damos chicha a esto de la fotografía ya conocemos las bondades de esta gama de objetivos Sigma. Fundamentalmente hago street photography y, teniendo ya un zoom y el 50mm stm de Canon montados en mi cámara APS-C, sentía que necesitaba una lente fija con una distancia focal más "estándar". 30mm que aplicando el factor de multiplicación en cámaras APS-C de Canon (distancia focal x1,6) se convierte en un 48mm con una apertura máxima de 1.4. Hay que decir que a esta apertura se consigue un bokeh brutal y muy bonito visualmente, pero que hace díficil enfocar con precisión si estamos cerca del motivo a fotografiar. También, como es típico a grandes aperturas, podemos apreciar algo de aberración cromática, pero desaparece cuando cerramos a 2.8 diría (con el 50mm stm tienes que cerrar algo más). Luego, punto dulce de este objetivo lo colocaría entre f4 y f5.6, logrando una nitidez buenísima. Los colores me parecen geniales, y de hecho es el objetivo que me ha dado el mejor color y contraste para trabajar a posteriori en el revelado... y la construcción del objetivo transmite fiabilidad. La única pega que le pondría es que pese a que la anilla de enfoque hace cómodo el enfoque manual, me gustaría que esta se desplazara un poco más suave. Dato extra: está pensado para cámaras APS-C, pero lo podéis montar sin problemas en cámaras full frame, con un viñeteo pronunciado a máxima apertura, pero que más o menos desaparece cuando cerramos dos o tres pasos el diafragma (también es fácil de corregir durante el revelado).

Pourquoi ce titre racoleur ? Parce qu'après avoir utilisé un zoom 18-200mm de Nikon pendant 5 ans, je redécouvre la photo grâce à cette focale fixe qui offre un rendu fabuleux. Avec mon zoom qui est pourtant de qualité correcte (pour un zoom), je cherchais les détails sans vraiment les trouver. Ici c'est le jour et la nuit: les couleurs et les détails sont vraiment là, et le plaisir qui va avec. La focale est idéale selon mes goûts, car on prend les vues en très léger grand angle qui correspond presque parfaitement à notre vision naturelle, avec la possibilité de "prendre avec" quelques éléments qui seraient présents dans notre vision périphérique. Reste toujours la possibilité de recadrer légèrement si nécessaire, option tout à fait possible avec un Nikon D7100 24MPixels.
