One Special Night

Seemed like a made for TV movie, but we enjoyed it for the chemistry between the characters. It was also bittersweet since our family has experienced loss due to Alzheimer's.

It's a Christmas love story, but not with a cookie cutter plot or actors that have made the same movie, different title, a dozen times. These are mature actors in roles where the characters are well-seasoned by life. The plot is fairly original, with many tender moments that tug at your heart, and a few unexpected twists. A movie not made for 20-somethings who think shallow emotions from shallow people are good movie material. Arrived on time, packaged adequately for shipping and good product packaging. Not easy to find, so grab it while you can. Sure can't beat this price.

I like Julie Andrews and James Garner, and both are good here, but this made for TV film is a formula instance of the "geriatic romance" genre. As usual, one of the two protagonists has lost interest in life after losing a long time mate, and it's up to the other one to convince him or, here, her that life can still be worth living. As usual, there is a parallel drama with one of the protagonists' children. There's never the least doubt about where things will end up. The twist here is that Andrews and Garner initially dislike each other intensely but end up getting to know each other when they are stranded together. Also, Garner's daughter desperately wants her own mother as she struggles with her husband and with motherhood. Also, as usual, the issues of the younger generation seem more interesting than those of the other generation: romance between the elderly just isn't sufficiently involving to carry a movie by itself.

A beautiful story with an actual storyline that is unique and not like every other movie out there for rent.

The heart will not be stilled by loss. This movie gives a poignant portrayal of two older people who have loved well and long but know the agonizing pain of loss through death. Their accidental meeting brings out their defenses but also vulnerabilities. James Gardner and Julie Andrews are perfect for the roles of two people lost but with hearts still open for love. Well done from cast, scenery and musical score. All around a good movie.

Julie Andrews (Catherine) and James Garner (Robert) have the kind of chemistry that makes the art of acting look effortless. We are swept into their story, as they invite us to leave the peculiarities of our own narrative, to wonder about in the predicament they find themselves. This story line is believable. Why?Because, often that's how life happens; we are clicking along in our routine or rut when out of nowhere a stranger appears transforming our life, exposing our dreams, hope, desires, despair, regret, depression, loneliness, joy, happiness and excitement. We become acquainted, another chapter in our lives unfolds. Often, without fireworks drama but a gentle breeze of familiarity.That's how it all unfolds, people going about their business, a small gesture of kindness, when Catherine offers Robert a lift, transforms their lives. They have both lost. One is only a few footsteps ahead of the other in grief. The other knows, grief will soon knock at his door.Catherine and Robert had good marriages. These kinds of people often find love again, soon. Why? Because they know what it looks like, how it feels and tastes They do not take it lightly. They do not pass it by, hoping for a better offer. There is no disrespect for the wonderful marriages they had. There is only room to live, again.

Saw this on TV years ago and my wife loved it but a copy was hard to come by. Finally got this but disappointed that subs are only in Spanish and no English. As she is deaf this made the purchase pointless. Quality isn't very good either but it is an old made for TV movie so acceptable for that. Movie itself is really nice though and perfect for Christmas viewing

This really heart-warming film is always the first of the seasonal films that we start watching each Christmas. Julie Andrews and James Garner play wonderful parts and really help it to be the magical type of film we all love to enjoy each Christmas season.

It has always been one of my favourite films and has two of my favourite actors so i was pleased to be able to buy it on DVD.so i am biased. If you like a touching story well acted then i would recommend this to them. R.P

Nice romantic Christmas film, I would say more suitable for familys with teenage children. Enjoyable film

Perfect feel goood film for a winters evening with old fashion values. James Garner and Julie Andrews both played very convincing parts.
