Be a True Teacher!
This book has opened my eye and has taught me powerfully. It challenges me to get out of my cultural zone. When I teach in a multicultural church or cross-cultural place, don't pour my own cultural teaching style on those students; rather take time to learn their cultures and learning styles so that I can teach them in the ways that they can learn much much more effectively. As a learner to become a teacher, I need to be transformed to be less of my cultural self, and to become more of others. This does not mean that I am not "be myself"; it means that I need to expand myself. This book explains clearly why we must be an incarnational teacher and how to achieve that goal practically. I strongly recommend this book to everyone who is called to be a teacher of the truth. If we do not grasp this truth and practice the truth, we will never be a true teacher that He has called us to be.

a thougtful and practical guide to teaching cross culturally
The Lingenfelters have done a service by digesting and summarizing important research pertaining to cultural differences and by applying it specifically to the experience of teaching and learning. This book will serve to provide a good introduction to this topic. The authors provide an abundance of illustrations from their own experience and that of others. This book cautions the practicioner against simplistic responses and comes to terms with the practicalities of teaching in another cultural context, where one will need strategically to combine traditional methods with those with which we are more accustomed in the West. It is an easy read but not for that lacking in substance. I recommend it!

Opened my eyes to cultural assumptions I make
Very helpful in preparing for teaching overseas, and it opened my eyes to teaching here too. I didn't think about all the assumptions I make everyday. Easy to read and not too long.

Not particularly helpful for short-term teaching ministry
I didn't find this book particularly helpful in my study. There are a few good pointers relating to cross-cultural ministry, but I didn't find it especially helpful for the contexts within which I would be serving. It may be more useful if one were going to teach classes for a half-year or year at a time in a particular culture. My cross-cultural work is teaching a week at a time and the principles were not so useful in that context.

Home & Abroad
The Lingenfelters have combined experience in field anthropology and cross-culturally teaching to produce a practical guide for prospective teachers. Anecdotes from classroom situations in urban US schools and in overseas contexts offer unique insight into the cultural dynamics of learning. Readers who anticipate teaching in Intercultural contexts will find this volume a useful primer.I recommend that you read this in sequence with their other books: first Ministering Cross-culturally, then Teaching, and finally Leading Cross-culturally. They have written other books, but this was intended to be read in series.

Vital for teachers in USA and overseas
I wish I had read this sooner when I taught in several different minority schools. I had real a-ha moments as specific encounters with students and colleagues from other cultures suddenly made sense. I probably could have saved myself a lot of frustration and tears if I had read this a few years ago.

Fabulous overview of Cross-Cultural Teaching
There's lots of books out there on teaching, and lots of books on multiculturalism, but FINALLY a book that addresses each area from the other's perspective! This book deals with the nuts and bolts of different cultures, but it also comes from an academic perspective, including the research and citations to back it up. Written by two PhDs with the practical knowledge to back up the scholarship, this gave me the answers I needed for working with my inner city/multicultural church groups. It's very readable, and reasonably priced. I'm delighted with it and recommend it highly.
