Good Edition of Terence; Bad Use of End Notes
I read this English edition of Terence's Comedies as part of my journey through the Western canon. My rating and this review are not of Terence himself, but of this English edition.First, Peter Brown writes an excellent introduction about Terence, how Roman plays borrowed extensively from Greek models, Terence's use of the prologue, and how rape was portrayed and understood by ancient Roman society. He also includes helpful introductory notes for each of the six comedies.Second, his English translation is excellent. It is clear, concise, and accessible.Third, Brown's explanatory notes provide helpful explanations of the text. However, they are end notes and not footnotes. End notes require the reader to constantly flip back-and-forth in the book. Footnotes are much preferred.Because of the use of end notes instead of footnotes, I've given this good English edition of Terence 4-out-of-5 stars.

Great Roman comedies
The book itself came in great condition, and arrived super quick (w/ Prime). Terence is one of the great Roman playwrights we have complete plays from, and they are very interesting. I even suggested one to the theatre company I work for because I'd love to direct it. Whether you just want to study the history of theatre by reading Terence, or you have an interest in actually doing a play, I'd recommend this.

Typos, editing
This is about the Kindle edition.I am nearing the end of the third comedy, and want to vent. So far, every occurrence, and there are quite a few, of the word 'over' has been written as 'offer'. There are some minor nuisances of formatting, and there are two or three places, so far, where the text is undecipherable.Maybe one star is unkind for the translation, etc., overall, but these errors really are unacceptable from such a renowned publisher. I haven't had this experience with their paperbacks.

a Classic
What can I say I like the classics and it was a required college book. If you enjoy the classics give it a whirl.

Loved this book
I bought this book for a Roman history class and I really enjoyed the plays. I think that I will read more than just the assigned readings.

Delivery excellent. Arrived exactly on time. Book however damaged. though packaging intact.
Book, as delivered, was seriously damaged (though packaging intact): Back cover and last 4 pp of book have a rip at the bottom left corner. Took almost 18" of Scotch Magic tape to mend the cover and pages.Front cover, and 45 subsequent pp, have a fold at the top right corner.I would judge the book to be of unsaleable condition, and this should have been spotted before packaging it and delivery.Very disappointing, and the first time this has happened, for me, in many years of using Amazon. The actual book content looks to be just what I was after, and a substantial academic work.
