Creative Minds African American Family Toy Figure Set

I purchased these dolls as a Christmas gift for a 3-year-old. I was unsure at her age, if these dolls would be a hit or sit in a corner and collect dust. My review is based on the feedback I received since it's been a few weeks of her playing with them. These dolls were a complete hit. She hasn't stopped playing with them. Her mother thought they were the cutest thing and promised to buy a dollhouse specifically for them. These aren't bendable, but for younger children I really don't think they need to be. She carries them around everywhere. The quality is good. They are hard plastic and will not break even in the hands of a 3-year-old. I couldn't resist - I bought every little "family" the company had available. My two youngest granddaughters (sisters) are very close in age, and this was a very fun add-on to their new Christmas dollhouse. I'm delighted with the quality, and also to have done enough research now to fully understand how dollhouse figures and furniture are sized, so I could order with full confidence the dolls would fit the house. Of course these particular figures only came in one size, but it was the "standard" size scale that fits the majority of dollhouses perfectly. And they truly WERE perfect! We were all delighted at the quality, detail and diversity of the dolls - and the girls were relating to each doll, naming the families and even giving names to some of the individual dolls within minutes. My daughter says they continue to play with the figures every day, so this was a great value all the way around.

These sturdy figures were originally marketed to schools and day cares, so they are meant to stand up to hard play and abuse. Children can stand on them, throw them, pound with them, and they will hold up fine. We've had them at my library where I am the children's librarian for two years, and they are like new. We also have the community helpers set. I like the diversity, both of ethnic groups and of gender roles. The only two things I don't like about this set are 1) the boy in the wheelchair has a ball, which sometimes interferes with what the children are imagining when they play with him. For instance, if they are pretending he is at a wedding the ball is not appropriate. The second thing is that they keep thinking the girl with an eye patch is a pirate, which is kind of cute, actually. I bought this set for our 3 year old girl, and four year old boy. I noticed when their GG (great grandma) was using a walker after surgery they played with the walker lady a lot, and referred to her as GG. So, these figures could be used either just as a general way to help little ones understand differing abilities, or to help them specifically process their feelings if a loved one has health changes that requires a wheelchair, walker, etc. My real kids at home, and my library kids, love to play with these figures.

This doll family is perfect for play therapy. My clients love them and I love that each member of the family is represented. I bought this set in African American and Caucasian. I will be purchasing a Hispanic and Asian set very soon. The only thing I did not like about these dolls is that they do not bend at all. But if you can get past that, I think you will be ok.

I bought this set and a darker set to use in Bible class to teach about families. I teach the cradle roll class, so the baby and the toddler are too small to be handled (and thus mouthed) by the students. But the other children and adults are just what we needed. I'm happy with my purchase, but I wish I could change two things: 1. The skin tone on this Caucasian set is weirdly pallid and yellow, so they all look a bit sick (embalmed?). 2. The attire really needs to be updated--this is such a 90s family. That being said, this is the most durable set on the market, and I'm sure that thirtyish bucks will last year church a long time.

I would be nice to make the ball not attached but loose or on a string so the figure can be played with such as rolling it into the doll house for a meal or something more than just throwing a ball. Limited It would be nice to make these out of a rubber that is bendable or has some flexibility. It would have been nice to include a See and Eye Guide dog with a little vest.
