Very Good meter worth the price
When buying a TDS tester I suggest that you also get the HM Digital TDS Calibration Solution (342 PPM) to periodically re-calibrate your HM Digital TDS meter or HM Digital Water Quality Tester. It is available through Amazon for around $9.00, and is worth having to periodically check your drinking waters TDS level. This meter performed very well. I first tested the meter with the calibration solution. I took three readings with this solution before measuring tap water, purified bottled water, and Reverse Osmosis filtered water. All readings were taken at a room temperature of 75 degrees, but water temperature was not tested, nor was the PH of the water. Calibration Solution: Reading #1 gave 328 PPM, #2 gave 331 PPM, #3 gave 336 PPM. I followed the direction each time I took a reading, and gave the TDS meter several minutes to air dry in between readings ( about 5 minuets) During this time the TDS solution was covered.. I noticed that each time I tested the solution the reading went higher. So I took two more readings following the same procedure as before. Reading #4 330 PPM, Reading #5 329 PPM. I have to think that the meter is fairly accurate. Readings were all in the plus or minus 3% range. Next I tested purified bottled water Reading #1- 3 PPM, Reading #2- 5PPM, Reading #3- 3PPM. Then I tested Reverse Osmosis water after changing the filters two days before this testing. My R/O test range was between 15-22 PPM Regular tap water is a very "Hard" water out here in the Desert Southwest. It ranged from 185 to 240 PPM. Pretty awful . We don't drink the water out of the tap unless we have to. The result show a fairly accurate and good TDS tester. I believe some of the variances in the readings may be attributed to water temperature and or PH or both. Even though I gave this tester a 5 star rating I would invest a few extra dollars for the model that has the (ATC) automatic Temperature control compensator , and the PH tester. This meter did perform as advertised , and performed well. It is worth the price, and for now I'm happy with it. Hope this helps you make a decision.

Accurate!
I have several other tds meters. One is so cheaply made that you have a hard time turning it off. And it measures at least 2 ppm more than this one which is much more accurate. I like the translucent dark blue look. And when I press the on/off button it turns on and off THE FIRST TIME unlike other units I have owned. It has a simple on/off and another button to hold the number so you can take it out of the water and look at it. Simple but more of a quality unit compared to other units but not much more money at all!

Decent Device
It gets the job done. Easy to use. I'm sure there's a little error in a device so wallet-friendly, but that doesn't matter if you're just comparing a before and after.

Great for Hardness Testing of Tap and Filtered Water
This unit worked exactly as I hoped. I read the reviews and bought the slightly more expensive unit with temperature compensation. This is well worthwhile to ensure consistent measurement over varying water temperature. The unit is very easy to use although the button labels are hard to read. There is a quality reference scale printed on the back of the unit which is very useful. I verified that our tap water impurity level was around 200 which is ideal and aligned with a separate water test I did (see separate review). I also tested our "Perfect Water" filtration unit (see separate review) which showed a measurement of less than 10 (i.e. that the mineral content of our tap water had been reduced from 200 to less than 10 by the four stage filter) thus proving that the filter was working perfectly and also giving confidence in this great little measuring device (the filtered water tasted great but that isn't an indication of quality). If you are fitting a whole house humidifier with electric conduction steam generation, the water MUST be above a minimum level of hardness (i.e. the house water should not be softened) for these to work. This device could be used to verify that your water is suitable for this type of humidifier. Note that this device will NOT test water safety, it only indicates the levels of minerals in the water (i.e. hardness). You should still do comprehensive water testing if you are in any doubt about your water quality.

Works as Advertised, Instantly!
First, this device works great and it can't get any easier. I did a few tests and the results were consistent. For quality, ease of use, and 2 years warranty, I believe it deserves 5 stars. The sensors measure the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), which are the total amount of mobile charged ions, including minerals, salts or metals dissolved in a given volume of water in parts per million (ppm). However, I found out that water from the same source will measure differently when the temperature is different. For example, a room temperature water measured at 150ppm, but 110ppm when cold and 192ppm when hot. I thought its interesting. I like the fact that in the back of this device, they put this sticker so you don't need to memorize anything: How Pure is Your Water? ----------------------- 0-50ppm = ideal drinking water 50-100ppm = carbon filters, springs 100-200ppm = hard water 200-400ppm = average tap water and so on It also has protective cap to cover the sensors (not shown in the picture). It's factory calibrated and is ready to use, but can be re-calibrated with NaCl using a small Phillip screwdriver. Battery lasts for about 1000 hours and the instructions are clear with reference to the website if more information is needed. Overall, it's a 5 star item. No more guessing now!

Must have for a salt-water pool
I bought this almost 6 months ago so I've had time to use it and see if it could be used more for pool testing. I was concerned it wouldn't give an accurate reading since the salt ppm I was interested in was much higher than what others were mentioning in their reviews. Needless to say I'm thankful beyond belief that I found this and wished I had thought of looking for one earlier; this thing could have saved me thousands of dollars. Little history before I get to the nuts and bolts of my review... Bought to test salt levels of a salt water in-ground pool on the gulf coast. Units similar to this are for sale at pool supply shops online and locally by me for $150-$400. Salt water pools take the salt in the water and "zap" it so it becomes chlorine. My salt ppm needed to be between 2700 - 3400; 3200ppm being ideal, due to the sensor going bad, I kept adding salt and I was close to 8500ppm. Unknown to me, my pool was giving a low salt reading; so I kept adding salt. Bad move. $800 for a new chlorinator sensor and I found my salt levels were almost triple what they should have been. Thankfully, the new sensor won't turn on if the salt gets too high. Since salt is a solid, there's only one out - drain it. 15,000 gallons of water were pumped out onto the lawn (killed off anything green in that part of the yard for a while) and spent a night hearing the well pump run (bad electric bill that month $$$) Since getting this tester, I've been able to double check my pool salt level so that won't happen again. The tester is easy to read and use, honestly I didn't read the manual. For my purposes, I'm happy with a +/- of 100ppm. I did have some solution on hand to calibrate when it arrived so I did that first. It was slightly off but hasn't slipped since. I would encourage anyone with one of these pools to have a secondary tester like this and use it (depending on rain and splash-out) weekly to monitor levels. Paper strips wouldn't have worked for me due to the humid climate but this still looks like I took it out of the packaging. If/When the pool's sensor should decide to fail again I'll be able to save a lot of time, money and effort. It was an amazing value compared to what pool stores sold and a lot easier than running around with water samples only to pay someone else what I can do with the push of a button.

Simple and easy way to test your water with surprising results!
I think that the tester is accurate and yielded some surprising results. I bought the tester because I am taking an ecology class where we learned that some bottled water come from sources that have more contaminants that tap water. We have an aversion to tap water, thinking that it is unpure, when sometimes tap water is cleaner than natural spring water depending on your city's stringency in their water filtering process. I live in Boca Raton, Florida and I tested my sink tap water twice, once after running the water after 30 seconds and once after running it for 2 minutes. Sometimes contaminants are located in your pipes, so if you are concerned, you can run your water for a minute or two before using. The first reading was 156 and the second 130, which is in the category of hard water and better than average tap water. I then tested my Zephyrhills spring water, which tested at a whopping 170! This has opened my eyes to being skeptical of "pure water" myths and it is an easy and fun way to check too!

Meter was ok at low tds. Horrible at higher tds's
this is a great ppm pen, right out of the box it was accurate. tested my tap water and nestle pure life water. my tap was around 134, and the nestle pure life was around 60, compared the readings with my friend 80 dollar blue lab ppm and gave the same results. One thing though its noy water proof so you have to be very careful. Other than that great pen at a great price. Update 08/13/2014 I initially gave this item 5 stars but I had to lower to 3 for several reasons. I read all the other reviews but I could never find a direct comparison of the hm digital tds ez versus the hm digital tds-3 or any other models. So I created one to help someone make the best decision and get the most bang for your buck. While the hm digital tds ez meter is pretty accurate versus my hm digital tds 3 or hm digital aqua pro 1 at lower tds concentration it varried greatly at higher concentrations. I know the hm digital tds ez meter isn't temperature compensated like the other two but I tested water of the same temperature 77 degrees f. I took 2 tests one with straight tap water and one mixed with a low dose of mild nutrients. The tap water was rated 102 ppm on both hm digital tds-3 & hm digital aqua pro 1. The ppm how ever read 134 on the hm digital tds ez meter. Not bad considering it was only 32 ppm off. It wasn't as accurate but was still fairly accurate considering it is not temperature compensated as the other to are although I tested it at the optimum temperature of 77f. But when i tested the higher concentration solution my hm digital tds-3 and hm digital aguapro 1 both read 218 however the hm digital tds ez meter read 341 ppm. Off by over 120 ppm. I repeated this test three times turning each of the three unit's off and then back on and the results were the same every time. I would not recommend the hm digital tds ez. For a couple bucks more you can get a much more accurate quality meters. Also I like that the hm digital aqua pro 1 although not completely water proof (you can't submerge it) it is water resistance in case you drop it in water you can grab it quickly without it being damaged (lol lost two hm digital tds -3 to dropping them in water)'it also displays the tds & temperature simultaneously and has a magnetic back so you can put it on your refrigerator. The only draw back is it's max level it can read ppm's at is 5000 vs 9990 of the other two. I never go over 2000 ppm so this wasn't a issue for me. Hope this helps.
