The book Poetry Lessons makes a great case for using poetry in the elementary classroom on a regular basis. This books gives practical and easy ways to incorporate poetry into daily or weekly lessons. The lessons are not simply for the sake of poetry, but to help students learn to think about and expand their use and understanding of language in all aspects of language arts. I recommend this book to all K-5 teachers and teacher librarians.

Thank you, Georgia Heard!
This resource is a gem. I spent this past weekend taking it everywhere I went. I can't wait to get to school today to recommend it to my colleagues. If you are looking to add a deeper level to your fluency development lessons then check this out. Georgia Heard is a highly regarded teacher and poet. Her poetry is real and not stilted or contrived to suit the purposes of a lesson.I don't buy resources simply because they use the words CCSS in the title. I am familiar with Georgia Heard's work and as expected, she did not disappoint.

Great Resource!
This book is an excellent tool to understand how to implement the CCSS for poetry. It is not a quick fix - and very little with the Common Core is! This book aims to give the reader greater understanding of the standards. Lessons and strategies for implementation across the year are included. I found it to be easily read over the course of a week and I gained tremendous insight into what the standards expect. I am looking forward to using these strategies in the fall with my fourth graders.

Extremely Useful Resource
By far one of the most useful books on using poetry to get at some CCSS I have ever used. Extremely useful for students 1st-5th grade. I am a reading specialist and use this with my struggling readers in grade 2, and I have highly recommended it for the whole 2nd grade team.

Like What I see
Doesn't have as much for 4th grade, but what it does have looks good. The chapters are for all grades K-5.

Good for higher readers.
This book was well written, but some of the lessons left my younger students struggling with the concepts. Might be better targeted to higher reading levels.

Too wordy..
Anyone who writes for teachers should be more aware of our extreme time imitations. This book rambled on when I was looking for quick, already aligned lessons that would teach my kids about poetry in a fun way. Honestly, I found Pinterest more helpful.
