VR means "Vibration Reduction". It is a feature Nikon incorporates into certain lenses that allows some of the "camera shake" to be reduced, especially if you're shooting handheld. If you're a photographer, it allows you to shoot at slower shutter speeds and still retain a fairly sharp image. If you're into video, it stabilizes the image so that your footage doesn't look as jittery/shaky. Remember, most companies have a different name for this function. Canon calls it "Image stabilization" or "IS", Sigma calls it "Optical Stabilization" or "OS", and Tamron refers to it as "Vibration Compensation (or Vibration Control, depending on where you look)" or "VC". To the furthest extent of my knowledge, Sony and Pentax do not offer stabilized lenses since both companies incorporate in-body stabilization into the camera bodies themselves. Hope this helps!
