Originally named for Don Sebastiani's love of cigars and his father August's passion for water fowl (don't ask, long story), Smoking Loon offers an irreverent, tongue-in-cheek approach to enjoying wine. Although we don't take ourselves too seriously, Smoking Loon wines have been receiving serious notice—including 29 Best Buy Wine Spectator and Best Value Wine Enthusiast Awards and a host of other industry accolades. We see it as even more proof that the less-traveled path is often the most rewarding. Each vintage of Smoking Loon provides our winemakers the perfect excuse to have a little fun and indulge their inner loons a bit. They start by scouring the best growing regions across the globe for the best fruit of the season. Then, as is the bohemian way, they gently guide that fruit to its fullest potential, creating fruit-forward reds and whites that offer a keen blend of approachability, quality and value. "Smoking Loon's full-bodied wines embody the independent, bohemian spirit of our very own California, delivering wines of distinctive quality and value that are wholly without pretense." -PROPRIETOR DONNY SEBASTIANI

Be Home or Near a Delivery Depot
I LOVE Smoking Loon wines, so this was great. Until I realized I'd have to arrange pickup or work from home to sign for the delivery. Turns out the UPS station is close to my office, so I might do this again.

Excellent paired with red meats
I purchase this locally. It's a perfect red for pairing with red meats, especially better cuts of aged beef. However, it's also a nice choice paired with barbeque and even burgers. Part of the reason why is this is especially complex for such an inexpensive table wine. The tasting notes claim vanilla, cranberry, raspberry and herbs de provence aromas, with plum and a touch of chocolate. My palate detects more of a plum and cranberry with hard to identify herbs. In fact, I detect a slight peppery nuance, so my own experience differs from the tasting notes. Also, this is at the mid range of alcohol by volume for a pinot noir, sitting at 13.5%. It's not particularly high, but sufficiently potent that if you are pairing this with a meal I recommend not pouring and serving until the meal is on the table because it can go to ones head quickly on an empty stomach. It goes with most cheeses, but for me the best pairings are with cheeses along the lines of a decent Spanish manchego or an Italian provolone. I have tried this with sheep milk cheeses like pecorino romano and the tang of those types of cheese subdue the nuances of this wine, so the milder the cheese the better in my opinion. For an inexpensive table wine this is a bargain. If you are serving heavier meals and want a decent table wine to accompany them this is a safe choice.
