If the filter is not in correctly you can get tea leafs in your cup make sure your filter is pushed in all the way tight

Does it work with any standard size coffee/tea cup?

The teapot will work on anything with a flat rim up to 3 1/2 inches. The tea drains out of the center which is about 1/2 inch.
