The jar proved to hold treasure of an unexpected sort: a collection of some fifty-two ancient manuscripts, most of which reflect the teachings of a mystical religious movement we call Gnosticism (from the Greek word gnosis, "knowledge"). The texts are also, with few exceptions, Christian documents, and thus they provide us with valuable new information about the character of the early church, and about the Gnostic Christians within the church. In this volume, Marvin W. Meyer has produced a new English translation for general readers of four of the most important and revealing of these early Christian texts -- the Secret Book of James, the Gospel of Thomas, the Book of Thomas, and the Secret Book of John. Review: New, exciting knowledge - I decided to read the Gnostic Gospels based on the fact that the Catholic Church and the Pope in place, at the time, were the ones that removed them (i.e, The Gospel of Thomas). I have alwys known about these Gospels, but in all honestly I was happy to just read what the internet had to say. I thought all the missing Gospels would be included in this book, but was dissappointed to find out there were only 4 Gnostic Gospels included and I am still missing much more information. But this was a good starter for me. Some of them are hard to understand because it is basically some of Jesus' sayings, without any more elaboration. I am aware that I will need to read and re-read this book and some others. But I consider it all worthy after all. Knowledge always requires an effort. Review: Amazing Insight in these books! - I love this book as it has truly expanded bible study taking it to the next level. My only problem is that Marvin Meyer refers to Jesus as the "Child of Humanity" (his decision given the author's notes) instead of the more correct "SON OF MAN" as it is in Scripture. This makes it suspect that what else has he taken license with that might clarify instead of confuse? either way, if you are willing to get past these things and really press on with open mind, these books offer amazing insight in to how Jesus spoke at a much higher level to His disciples when in private and after His Ascension. ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | Best Sellers Rank | #818,062 in Books ( See Top 100 in Books ) #208 in Gnosticism (Books) #1,538 in History of Christianity (Books) #2,074 in Christian Church History (Books) | | Customer Reviews | 4.6 out of 5 stars 161 Reviews | ## Images ![The Secret Teachings of Jesus: Four Gnostic Gospels - Image 1](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71aK5+g45QL.jpg) ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ New, exciting knowledge *by M***O on May 1, 2012* I decided to read the Gnostic Gospels based on the fact that the Catholic Church and the Pope in place, at the time, were the ones that removed them (i.e, The Gospel of Thomas). My only problem is that Marvin Meyer refers to Jesus as the "Child of Humanity" (his decision given the author's notes) instead of the more correct "SON OF MAN" as it is in Scripture. Now they are available to everyone, openly and readily. Because of their historical and religious significance, they are important additions to the literature. They give a view of Jesus that many of us never get to hear. ## Frequently Bought Together - The Secret Teachings of Jesus: Four Gnostic Gospels - The Gnostic Gospels - The Nag Hammadi Scriptures: An Enlightening Compilation of Gnostic Manuscripts Revealing New Perspectives on Early Christianity, Ancient Judaism, and Greco-Roman Religions --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.jp/products/10679831-the-secret-teachings-of-jesus-four-gnostic-gospels](https://www.desertcart.jp/products/10679831-the-secret-teachings-of-jesus-four-gnostic-gospels) --- *Product available on Desertcart Japan* *Store origin: JP* *Last updated: 2026-10-19*
