This is a unique book, one any history buff, especially in the Northwest, should read.
I was writing a book of fiction about the Columbia River, the mid-section, and found this book so valuable. The author has done authentic research, through photographs and oral as well as written regional history, and I found out about the changes taking place on the Columbia with the introduction of dams and other industrialization, and what the Indian inhabitants, there for many thousands of years, experienced as the river, and their communities, lost their traditional place forever. George Aguilar reports what took place in a readable, unsentimental, clear style, as one of those people-- a great social history

What Once Was
This is a well-written and informative book about the Columbia River and the Native American tribes that lived along it before the river was obstructed with several dams. This is a story everyone should know about what once was and will never be again. Highly recommended!

Authentic, written by a Native American about his own ...
Authentic, written by a Native American about his own people, their culture, their own perspective. A lot of care and thought put into each page, well written and engaging.
