A taste of Shine
This was an awesome yet light read compared to A. Cain other stories. This was the story of Charlie and Matthew combined with moonshine, bounty hunters and gangsters. Charlie who a total independent stubborn badass heroine that doesn’t take any crap from anyone. Yet Matthew is the typical alpha male that wants to protect her and wrap her up in his wings. However, she isn’t going for it and she wants to do things her way. There is awesome steamy sex scenes and just enough drama to keep the pages turning with intrigue. This is a great read.

A fascinating ride through Prohibition
After finishing the book, I went back to re-read the prologue to see how fine the ruse was set up from the beginning. It was intentionally written to lead the reader astray or lost in the reader's own assumption until the end of the chapter. The protagonists have their fateful meet up within the first few pages and it all circles back with sweet serendipity and intrinsic grit. There's a slow build up of emotions that's par the course for the strong, silent type Matthew, but Charlie's got spunk and that's the real fun meat of all of the author's books- the kickass, complex heroine. There's a languid pace for the country setting of the story juxtaposed to the rusted star of Chicago and Prohibition. Action-packed with adrenaline and curveballs to the plot, it's a sweet, charming read to soothe the soul. It's the cozy sweater of the author's thus far published books, perfect for this upcoming winter.

Fanning myself!
Dang! That’s how you write a love story!Just when I thought I had this author figured out she up and changed the game.My heart is broken for Charlotte (Charlie, Blackbird). Her life has not been easy but it’s made her a complete baddie! She doesn’t take crap from anyone. I would say she’s flawless but that’s not exactly true.Matthew is the silent, brooding alpha type. He’s a watcher and super smart but he never saw Charlie sneak under his radar and into his life.I can’t wait for January to see where their story goes. I’m also crossing my fingers and toes that the author is able to write Eli and Nathaniel’s books!

DID YOU FIND WHAT YOU NEEDED?
What a different, and yes, in a great way, type of story from the talented Ms. Addison Cain. The story takes place during prohibition and will be an ongoing saga (not necessarily a cliffhanger, but will have much more to come.) The story will have a feisty, foul-mouthed, gun shooting, do-it-my-way female, and a group of moonshiners in Monroe County, West Virginia, and mobster kingpins from Chicago.Charlotte aka Charlie Elliot is more than meets the eye; she can hold her own, isn’t one to back down, or take crap off of anyone. She shocks most people with looking like a lady and cussing a sailor under the table, tells bawdy jokes, she knows about whorehouses, has been in them, but is still a virgin, she can drink moonshine, not afraid to enter a fight, and is a conundrum to most men, especially Matthew Emerson. One thing about Charlie, she is where she is in life because she has pulled herself up from the bottom of the muck and mire and made it happen.“If you’re going to dress up like a lady, at least pretend to talk like one.“Charlie considered Matthew’s words and had to agree she should try harder—until she recognized exactly what he’d said. Matthew didn’t see her as a lady at all—just some faker in a dress.”The Emerson men, Matthew, his older brother, Nathaniel, and cousin. Eli is all moonshiners. Matthew has Devil’s Hollow Roadhouse that offers food and is also used to conduct business for their moonshine operation. There will be several confrontations inside the Roadhouse with thugs from Chicago, ones who would take out the Emersons to get their hands on their still operation.“The Emersons don’t strike me as the type to start trouble—just to end it.”The plot will have Charlie Elliot showing up at Emerson’s and planning on spending some time in Monroe. The noisy boarding house proprietor thinks she should know more about Charlie, but she gets nowhere with her questioning. Charlie is such a free-spirit, doing her own thing, where it is hunting, wearing men’s clothing, sleeping outside, or taking a trip to Chicago. She enjoys visiting the Roadhouse, eating Matthew’s cooking, and then sashaying out the door. When trouble comes, she can act cool as a cucumber, but not afraid to fight like a man, throwing punches, and yes, she can fight dirty. The story will have kingpins from Chicago, ones that know Charlie well, coming to Emerson’s and trying to lure her back to Chicago. When she goes, Matthew must follow. He is an odd one, he has feelings for her but stays aloof, and some things he says to her makes her mad.The story is far from over and will be an ongoing saga. I can’t wait for the next story of Charlie and Matthew, A Trick of The Light Duet coming January 2019.

A great story full of surprises
This was a great story from Addison. She really set the stage for a great story that will finish up in the second half of this story. Charlie is such a great woman, but nothing like the proper lady should be in the 1920s but it makes her such a great character. I cannot wait to see how the story plays out in the next book. Great job.

A lighter Addison book
The first part in the Trick of Light Duet. This book is a lot different then the other books I have read of Addison Cain, but it is also a very familiar in the fact that this book has complex and layered characters and Addison have a beautiful detailed way of writing. It makes everything come to life. The story takes place during the prohibition in the world of bootleggers and the Chicago Mob. Charlotte is a very strong woman and very fierce when it comes to the protecting the people she loves. And she has so much love to give. Matthew is rough around the edges, but would do anything for his Charlotte. It is a wonderful story of hardship, tragedy, action and love.I look forward to reading the second part of this duet.

Not what I expected...
Ok, so I'm fairly new to Addison Cain, but I've devoured every black and twisted tale I've read from her. I love the dark!! So I was a bit apprehensive about this book as it is so much lighter than her usual fare. But, I needn't have worried. The flawless writing and incredible storytelling that are present in her darker books are all present here. Making this upbeat HEA story just as absorbing and fulfilling as her dark, twisted tales.
