Nostalgic 80s actions
Reading this for 100th time and still loving it. Of course you have to have grown up in the 80s to understand the writing and stories. To people born after the 80s, these stories and jokes might seem over the top to the point of non sensical but it is nostalgic for gen Xers. From the cold war with USSR to big hair fashion and arcades in the mall, these stories reflect the 80s every well. It is entertaining and a fun trip down memory lane. These comics are really just one big advertisement for the toy line but the back stories and development of these characters are worth reading. This is volume one and only contains issues #1 - #10 of the Marvel series. Snake Eyes and Scarlet are probably the two most notable characters. If you are a gen Xer like me, it is worth picking up.

Classic Stories
It all starts here for one of the most renowned non-super hero comics published from Marvel or DC. Larry Hama's frantic storytelling pace is perfect for the military action theme, with great 80s, mostly self contained stories. If you love 80s comics this is definitely worth the read.

IDW...thank you...but where is "...Hot Potato!"?
I mulled over what star rating I should give this volume and I have come to the conclusion (as you can see) that it deserves a 4 star rating. Here's why: I own the original issue #1, heck, I own absolutely every issue from the line, but issue #1 came with several other parts to the issue. It had a 2 page spread in the middle called "G.I. Joe Classified File `The PIT' GI Joe Headquarters" which showed a diagram of the underground base. It is also missing 4 pages of "G.I. Joe Classified File" for Scarlet, Breaker, Flash, and Stalker. Then it's missing 2 pages of "G.I. Joe Weapons Profile" for the VAMP and the Mobat. But the ultimate problem with this IDW Volume 1 is the fact that they leave out the "special bonus feature...Hot Potato!" This was a 10 PAGE short feature!!! 10 PAGES! Now, yes, it was re-issued sometime later in one of the Special Missions comics or something, I don't recall, but it was part of issue #1. I didn't really expect IDW to include the "G.I. Joe Classified Files" or the "G.I. Joe Weapons Profiles" but to exclude "Hot Potato!"??? Come on IDW. It's not like Hasbro doesn't have the rights to "Hot Potato!". I'm not sure why it was left out. To save 10 pages in Volume 1? It's offensive? Not PC enough for 2009? I don't know. Am I glad we have IDW's Volume 1? Yes! And thank you IDW. But folks in their late 20s and 30s will be buying this...not small kids that don't know "Hot Potato!" is missing. But for the remainder of the volume, it appears that the other 9 issues are intact. I at least checked issue 2 and that was complete. For a bare-bones Volume you get what need but for completionist...you don't. But I still hope that sales are good and that IDW can put out all 155 issues and maybe the other side issues too from the Marvel line...but in reality getting all 155 issues out seems impossible if sales dwindle. I would buy all volumes so wouldn't have to read my good copies. But don't let my 4 star review from stopping you buy this volume. I recommend it, I just don't understand what IDW was thinking.

Great Joe’s origin compilation
I did not read these issues back in ‘83 (although I could read already, it was not available in my country until much later, around the early 90’s). Now I have been able to read the original interactions and team spirit of the first members of G.I. Joe. Believe it or not, the histories are entertaining, showing certain military background from the author, Mr. Hama. Overall, a great read for fans of G.I. Joe.

Good for a nostalgia trip
GI Joe was the first comic I collected as a kid because I was so into the cartoon and toys; I mean what 7 year old kid in the 80s wasn't. GI Joe and Transformers were a way of life. When I was a teenager my mom threw out all my comics and unfortunately I lost of happy childhood memories.Glad to see them again in these collected volumes. I know their not the best stories and they're not "pc" by today's standards, but the kid in me loves `em. So, if you're a kid from the early 80s and fondly remember spending hours playing with GI Joe action figures and watching the cartoon youll probably love these too.

I can't believe I waited so long to dive into this series
I was raised with the cartoons and even as a child, knew that the comic books were a different beast. Know that there were major differences, I stayed away from the comics and kept to the cartoons because they resembled the toys the most. Now I've finally started reading the original comics run and boy was I missing out on something great back then. These are well put together. It's a more grown up story than the show and has minimal lasers. Most issues are stand alone or two-parters. They are all connected in the same way older comics were. Not the 5-6 issue arcs intended to be repackaged as trade paperback as seems to be the trend. I can't wait to get my hands on the rest of the volumes.

An excellent compilation.
I had always wondered why so many people praised Larry Gama's work on G.I. Joe. I now see why: interesting stories, high stakes, lots of action.
