Adorable! But bats look like mice with wings.
Bats at the beach book was far better than I anticipated. This is a fictional story in which the bats have a night at the beach. There are cute "jokes" in the wording and images that make the book so batty but paralleling humans to show that difference. These parallels actually heal to teach more than you would think about bats. For example there are cricket legs coming out of marshmallows or the snack bar is hanging next to a light bulb which teaches that bats eat bugs and hang upside down. I was overjoyed that someone would honor bats by making them the main characters of a wonderful children's book. My one complaint is that the bats look more like mice with wings - not like real bats. I know there are a lot of bat species in the world, but most of them have very big pointy ears or some sort of projections to the face or nose... these bats did not have those features. In fact, the only way you know they are bats is they have bat wings. I just wished they looked less like mice and more like a bat but still being cute.

Cute book
My 4 year old daughter told me about this book because they read it at school so I decided to purchase it for home. The only problem I have has nothing to do with the book itself, which is cute and has nice illustrations, but with how it was damaged when delivered. I didn't want to go through the hassle of returning it and waiting for another so I just stuck with it but it was disappointing to have a damaged item.

Bats at the Beach
My three year old son enjoys this book. I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. Some of the rhyming is a little stretched, or the flow of the reading isn't fluent. But some of prose is cute...the bats roast bugs at the beach (bug-mallows). The pictures are pretty "dark". I know the story takes place during the night, but I just think it could be nighttime, but the pictures be lighter. It is quite a big board book (hence the lap board book) and a little heavy/bulky. Not something you'd want to lug around on a trip for sure.

Fun and Original
This book series is original and fun. The art is great also. I bought this book many years ago as a gift for a child and have given it again and again over the years. I also bought a copy for myself. It makes me smile and has been an excellent anytime book from daytime reading to bedtime story.

Cute read aloud book when studying Bats.
I used this book as a read-aloud while teaching Second Grade. We were using Common Core and used a Bat Themed Unit. There was not much real information in the book but it was a cute read aloud.

Grandson loved this book
Such a beautifully illustrated book. The story is great and the author puts an interesting and humorous spin on this story of the bats going to the beach at night.

Stunning!
I'll start with the artwork: one word - STUNNING! Brian makes those beach-bound bats so appealing! Young children will want to look at the pictures over and over - there's so much to see. The moonglow on the ocean, the fireglow on the faces of the bats, the humorous activities of the bat children..... And what kid won't LOVE those icky bugmallows roasting over the fire! Now the text: this is such a fresh story. Kids will love hearing what those playful bats do at the beach while the rest of the world is fast asleep. This one is a pure joy from start to finish - and one that your kids will ask for again and again.

Sweet sweet book
I'm not a gifted writer, but I certainly think this book was well written. The prose flows, very soothingly, making it a favorite "last book" before tuck-in. The pictures are sweet, and detailed enough to inspire my child to look further, ask questions, and add to the story on his own. It also lends itself to skipping ahead, or around, without disturbing the story too much, making it good when he's impatient, or he wants to read it himself. We've been reading this book since he was 18 months old, and it has grown with him.I only wish it came in a board book, because little hands can be hard on soft pages! (buy two copies!)

Love it
Its soft and has nice webbed/ sewing details on the wing. And looks just like the character in the book. It sits perched on my bookshelf ready to guard my home library from bugs that go bump in the night ;)

Nett, aber nicht ganz abgerundet
hält nicht mit "bats at the library" nicht ganz mit; jedenfalls regen die Fledermäuse am Strand Fantasie und Lachmuskeln nicht so sehr an wie in der Bücherei!
