The antenna is 18" long when fully extended, including the base. It operates very smoothly. Once it is extended, it is not going to fall back down. It's kind of short for an FM antenna, which is usually about twice as long, but if you don't have the space for a longer antenna, or you are replacing a shorter one, this one should work fine. Make sure the base matches your current antenna's base.

I got this to replace the antenna on my emergency Panasonic radio that had broken off at the screw point. This one fit the spot perfectly and I was able to get reception back on my radio without having to jerryrigg a wire onto the screw as I had been doing before I found this replacement.
