The yeast is thriving. Even though the heat mat doesn't get "hot", I put a heat-resistant silicone mat underneath it as a precaution to protect the granite countertop. I also set the starter jar on a baking rack plus a thin piece of wood to keep it from coming into direct contact with the heat mat.
