Cats (Smithsonian)

I purchased several of these for my classroom library. My students enjoy them and I would definitely purchase again!

Nicely presented and well photographed

We have several books from these series (including Heart, Brain, and Dolphins). These other ones are much more detailed/informative than the Cats book. The Cats book is indeed for young kids (4-7 tops), while the other ones have much more detailed scientific information. As an adult without a science background I learned a lot from them while reading to my 7 years old. Depending on you child's age and what you are hoping to get from the Cats book it may be just right for you. We had other cat books for kids and this one didn't add anything.

In clear, straightforward language, Simon-one of today's best-known children's science writers-emphasizes information of special use to young pet owners, such as how to understand a cat by interpreting its sounds and body language.Simon ends with a list of questions for would-be pet owners to consider before opting for a cat. The book is jam-packed with delightful color photos, including those of a cat springing forward, a cat "acrobat" -twisting in midair to land on all fours-a just-been-born kitten, kittens frolicking, and a young (perhaps overly curious) cat hanging from a tree branch with just a small part of one paw.

I was expecting from the picture a book with the average number of pages and lots of information and pictures. But it's thinner and smaller than a magazine. Very disappointing.
